This Offense hates being ahead

It really seems that this offense doesn't like to have leads in games. It is almost like they tighten up and try not to screw up, and thus end up screwing up. They seem to play much more loose when they are behind.

2018 Colorado - Nebraska is down 14, then scores 21 unanswered to take a 21-17 halftime lead. Then they score 7 points in the 3rd and that's that.

2018 Purdue - Down 20 to 7 at the half, the offense get's its shit together by putting up 21 in the 2nd half but Purdue ends up putting up points too. Too little, too late.

2018 Wisconsin - down 20 to 3 at the half, See above.

2018 NW - down 13-14 at the half, Nebraska comes alive in the 2nd and has a 10 point lead with 5:41 left in the game. We all know what happened next.

2018 Minnesota - 28 straight points for Nebraska but the tide turns just before halftime. Minnesota rattles off 21 straight to come within 7. Nebraska then pulls away late in the 4th after scoring 7 in the 3rd.

2018 Ohio State - Leading 21 to 16 at half, Ohio state scores 14 unanswered and Nebraska doesn't score a TD until 2:57 left in the 4th.

2018 MSU - they don't get their shit together until late in the 4th and win 9-6.

2018 Iowa - Nebraska scores 15 in the fourth while scoring 13 in the other 3 quarters combined.

2019 South Alabama - Up 28-7, USA scores 2 TD to come within 7. Offense doesn't do shit in the 2nd half.

2019 Colorado - Up 17 at the half, the offense scores 0 in the 3rd and besides the 75 yard run by Washington, the last points came at 5:49 left in the 4th.

Offense was at fault last week. Our defense was on the field quite a bit because of our offenses inability to sustain drives.

On the other hand, when Scott's offense works the way it did at Oregon and UCF, they have the ability to score quickly and that would put the defense back on the field quickly also...But, I don't mind in that scenario because at least the offense did not leave the field empty handed.

Hard to blow a lead when playing from behind.

And as far as being on the field a lot. It is different being on the field frustrated that your offense is laying eggs vs being on the field a lot when you offense is scoring up a storm.

Pretty common though...teams obviously get more aggressive when they are losing, run longer routes, and the qb takes more risks. This can cause a game to turn into a blowout or a team can come back. Fans also 2nd guess when we take risks. We were up 7 with four minutes left. Could have sat on the ball after the Shenault fumble but decided to throw deep and it backfired. Throwing deep routes and abandoning the run when you are leading gets criticized doing so while losing is expected and often results in a more wide open offense.

I agree but it seems we enter prevent offense way too soon. So many underwhelming 3rd quarters.

I would say this O doesn't yet have the ability to put anyone away. They can use their speed and abilities to score and put pressure on a D but once the D adjusts then it becomes an even game. We do not yet have the ability to use all the tools in the tool kit. Until we can use all dimensions of the attack, expect this same outcome.
