on 3rd & 4 from the Northwestern 29 yard line with 7:28 on the clock in the 2nd quarter. Our captain senior left tackle got completely abused and was driven backwards into our captain junior quarterback. First, how does Lewis let that happen? Second, Tommy tried to avoid the sack by making yet another ill-advised off balance over the shoulder chuck of the ball to a covered receiver. Pick six.

At that point I was screaming at the TV to run the ball. Cross was getting six yard runs. Newby was getting six yard runs. Even Tommy busted a run or two by that point. We had two downs to get 4 yards. Worst case Northwestern ball at the 29 and the field to drive. Why do we choose to throw the ball with that down and distance at that place on the field? We have Northwestern where we want them and are on the way to taking control of the game. Instead our team leaders continue to make the most remedial of mistakes. However, I feel that our coaches are often asking them to do things they don't really excel at in key situations of games, which contributes greatly to our losses. This play being just one example.

I realize this is just one play, but it was a huge swing in the game and in points at a time when Northwestern was reeling. It gave them a huge lifeline. Am I wrong?

I agree. I told the people.I was watch with that we lost the game in the first half when we failed to take advantage of the time.of possession and plays snapped advantages.

The funniest thing was the announcer said right before the play was run that TA needed to be accurate here, because even he knew we were passing on 3rd and short.

Told my wife as much as well.

It is the same with Langsdorf as it was with Beck. I compare it to an alcoholic who knows getting drunk again can cause relationship problems, jail, health problems, death, but he HAS to take that drink, Probably why some people call it a disease. The situation there called for a run on third and probably kicking the FG on 4th if we didn't move the chains. Langsdorf HAD to have known this is what should have been done, but he COULDN"T HELP HIMSELF. It is a sickness.

I would argue that there were a couple other biggies in the first half. One was TA throwing the ball so Newby had to go out of bounds to get it on the wheel route. A well-thrown ball there would have been 6. The other was the block below the waist on Sterep away from the play when Carter plowed of a 1st down to the NW 40. That was a bogus penalty if you ask me and put us in something like 3nd and 17.

It was a huge turnaround. Not the first time TA has made a wild throw like that either

I also find it interesting that Tommy wasn't benched, even if just for a series, after that play. I think it says a lot about what's behind him.

Agreed on those biggies. Huge momentum moments that were lost. The Newby wheel route was an easy six with a decent throw. Most D1 QBs that have started for 3 years make that throw. He could have even led him a bit in bounds if he wanted, he was that wide open. While Sterup played a pretty bad game all around, I thought this call was crap, although I may be incorrect technically. Sterup basically fell down and the defensive player ran into him. It wasn't much of a block at all IMHO, which was typical of Sterup's day.
