Lavar is the biggest douche dad of an athlete in the country. He shows up on local tv all the time and always comes off as a jerk.
Todd Marinovich's Dad had similar aspirations for his kid.
No. It's creepy when a parent tries to live vicariously through their kids.
I think he's hurting his kids more than he's helping them, claiming Lonzo is better right now than Steph is insane. Saying he'd beat mj when he was averaging 2.2 points in college while mj was averaging 35 in the NBA is insane. It invalidates everything else he says as nonsense. I'd have told my dad he can't come to games anymore if he was 1/100th as outspoken as Lavar.

Shouldn't this guy be turned into Social Services for parenting while being exceedingly high as a kite?
What I didn't understand is why he'd even come out and say this. Any deal couldn't be completed until 2020 anyway.
I see a Bell/Kardashian (or Bell/Jenner) marriage in the future.
Its just the next in the long line of "me me me and only me" that society pushes for and then makes fun of when the person has some failings.

Good point, but there's the old propaganda technique that says "if you're going to lie, make it a big one". And if you follow politics, honesty isn't exactly a priority right now.
I believe there was an article in the last month or so where the dad essentially told all NBA GM not associated with the Lakers to not draft him because Lonzo would only be playing for the Lakers.
Sometimes playing locally works out great (Lebron, although he did leave for a time), sometimes it doesn't. There was a 30 For 30 on Chris Herron ("Unguarded"), and he also recounted his story on Joey Diaz's podcast last week about how going back to play in his hometown (Boston) was the worst thing that could have happened for him.
I think with Lonzo, his dad will be in the picture wherever he goes, and that makes this story different. Unfortunately for Lonzo and his brothers, I think a lot of people are hoping for their demise (feels weird to say) just so his father will STFU.
I really only watch TV when I'm at the gym, and there seem to have been a lot of Kardashian-style promos for the Ball family airing on ESPN lately.

Those kids are going to spend a lot of hours on the therapists couch at some point later on in life. Bank on that. Their dad is not doing them any favors here.

The best part about helicopter parents...they don't think they are being helicopter parents. So that makes it even funnier.

In tennis, you're out there on an island and self promotion impacts just the individual. It will be interesting to see how this works out in a team environment.
I don't remember him being this crazy. Maybe he was, but this LaVar Ball situation seems like that, X 10, to me.
Earl Woods and Richard Williams are prime examples of parental ego gone wild. Both worked out though. Individual sports its easier to do but Ball is going to always have 4 others he will need to rely on the court.
But in a professional team environment there will always be stars and supporting cast members.
They still work as a team. In Cleveland, no one doubts that LeBron is the MVP, who receives more attention, money and fame than other players. Yet they still find a way to operate as a team.
Guarantee he's made some money off purely taking up his sons. Annoying yes, but he has a national name now and ESPN can't wait to interview him. Say what you will about his personality but the guy is smart.

I understand he is trying to maximize financial value for his kids talents but he seems to be a little too sure of their abilities. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see the Balls have average/below average NBA careers.

And it was similar offensive talk by the other candidate that resulted in her NOT getting elected.
I don't mean to turn this into a political discussion, but I don't think you were following my point. The losing candidate was too programmed to speak on the tested out talking points while the winning candidate said brash things that voters found refreshing. Sure every candidate may seem offensive based on policy, but there should be little doubt which candidate was much less polished but said it how it was. That candidate won.
The kid is a real talent, but he is going to probably disappoint due to the massive out of whack expectations....
