Was having a discussion with a Friend this morning regarding the Cost of going to College today. And we moved to the Cost for a Walk On Player on the Football Team versus a Full Scholarship Player. We looked up the Numbers for the University of Nebraska:

2017-2018 Undergraduate Cost of Attendence:

Resident - Undergraduate Residence Hall:

Tuition & Fees - $ 8,464
Housing & Meals - $11,234
Books & Supplies - $1,024
Personal Expenses - $3,904
Loan Fees - $66
Resident Total Cost: $24,702

Non-Resident Total Cost: $38,982

These are the University of Nebraska own Numbers. One could argue that it would cost more or less than the cost shown above. They could get other Scholarships, live off campus or live at home in some cases. Exactly, but none of those options would guarantee that it would cost less to go to College and get a degree (or just go and not get a degree). And then there are some expenses here that Scholarship Players may still have to pay as well.

But the general concept of the costs for a Walk On here is true.

If the Walk On Football Player is on the team for four or five years they have a substantial investment in their education that a Scholarship Player will not have to Pay For or Pay Back.

If a Walk On Player is from Nebraska and considered a Resident, and is on the team for four or five years, without figuring Interest on any Student Loans they would receive or increases in cost by UNL while they were there, their Cost is:

4 Years: $98,808
5 Years: $123,510

Non-Resident:

4 Years: $155,712
5 Years: $194,910

This is a Substantial Expense that will impact them for the rest of their lives. If they leave College with $100,000 in Student Debt at 3.5% Interest amortized over 15 years gives them a monthly payment of $715/month.

This is a major Lifetime commitment for the Experience to Walk On.
