Texas AD Fired: report

Mack Brown is laughing somewhere.

"Doing less with more" is the Longhorn's motto.
Texas is a mess and I'm OK with that.Winking I think they can turn it around, but they are trying to totally flip an entitlement good ole boy culture. IMO, slowing down how early they fill their recruiting class is a really good thing for them. They used to fill early with guys that in many cases were maxed out in high school and then never progressed once they hit college. Texas will be back eventually. IMO, in the long run they would be best suited to stick to a pro-style offense and get the best damned pro potential QBs and skill players they can. Baylor, TCU and the rest have the corner on the up tempo fun and gun stuff and trying to beat them at their own game isn't going to work unless they can hire one of their coaches away.

Poor Texas. Ran roughshot over the Big 12, got everything they wanted, how they wanted, got their own network, and somehow things went to hell. Takes real talent to F something up to the extent it is today. Congrats on the achievement.

Easily the biggest underachieving college football program of all time.

Since going 13-1 in 09, TX has been 5-7, 8-5, 9-4, 8-5 and 6-7. A Callahanish stretch of years.
Since their appearance in the MNC, the Rivals recruiting ranking of TX has been 3, 3, 2, 24, 20 and 12.

Between Briles and Patterson and Sumlin, it is safe to say Texas has the 4th best coaching staff at best in that state. Texas simply doesn't offer a kid anything he can't get, and get better, at 3 other places in his own state.

I lived in Texas for 25 years, it's not like Nebraska. Fan loyalty in Texas changes like the wind for most texans. UT in Austin is a nice place, hands down beats any of the other schools all things being equal. TAM is nice, but it's different. If ut can get a good coach/recruiter, then they will be back on top.

Normally I would agree, but it looks really obvious that Texas is a total disaster.

If the message boards are any indication, this is a lot more about Steve Patterson than Charlie Strong. He was hired by the previous administration, is kind of a jerk, and has pissed off a lot of donors. Granted, he hired Strong and if the football program was doing really well, the rest would probably be forgiven.

You could say it mirrors Steve Pederson's time at Nebraska. Those that give a lot of money want to feel as if they are being heard even if you end up doing what you want. You got to know how to schmooze those donors. If Cally's team didn't implode and he had replaced Cosgrove, Pederson still might have been here.

I disagree with the loyalty of Texans. A big majority of Texans support UT. Like you said, return to winning and all will be forgiven. Unfortunately, Strong may take a hit if he can't turn it around soon.

Can't trust message boards, people who hang out there are total losers.

Charlie Strong had two good years at Louisville. He had some cat named Teddy Bridgewater for a QB. Hindsight being 20/20, it looks like Strong was the product of a great college QB and a weak conference. Oops. Texas wants to know if they can get a do-over?

What about his body of work at Florida as an assistant?? He was the only holdover from Florida that Urban Meyer decided to retain. I think that speaks volumes.

Strong had two good years as a head coach when he had a stud QB in a weak conference, his assistant days at Florida apparently don't travel well. Hindsight is 20/20 & I ain't saying I wouldn't have hired him, or that hiring him at the time was a mistake, but it looks like one now and we have to remember Texas had their sights set much higher at the time. Not sure how far down Strong was, but I think it's safe to say he was a back-up plan from day one.

Taking away the play calling duties from Shawn Watson was the first step in getting things turned around...he is a complete disaster of an Offensive Coordinator.

Does aTm's move to the SEC impact those recruiting rankings (I think the answer is yes - but how much)?
I think the shake up of the Big 12 hurt Texas and OU in recruiting. The conference looked unstable, which made it a harder sell to recruits. I don't think the Big 12 image has recovered from having several teams bolt without hesitation. Typhoid Texas, the Destroyer of Conferences.

An AD better be a good fit with the university president. Michael Crow, ASU's President, has been an extremely polarizing figure but his arrogance and quick trigger finger have been offset by his ability to get things done. Patterson appeared to be very much like Crow and they apparently were a very good fit. It is ironic that a place like UT, which has been accused of being the most arrogant place on the planet would be a bad fit for Patterson. At the time of the hire, I thought he was the perfect choice but UT has a new president.

I still don't think the Big 12 is going anywhere. Texas and OU can carry an entire conference and the right coach can turn Texas around in a snap. Plus, TCU and Baylor don't appear to be going anywhere either. Big 12 will be Texas schools heavy, but it will survive.

We already have TWO guys on our defensive staff and a head coach that are more qualified than him. No thanks.

You have zero guys on your staff even qualified to carry Coach Strong's jock strap. Explain to me who on your staff has two national championship rings and 3 BCS bowl wins. Go ahead and take your entire staff's accomplishments and try to match up to that.

Strong will turn around any program given enough time. Hell he won at Louisville with Watson as his OC. Nebraska fan's should appreciate that difficulty.

Considering both the SEC and the Big Ten have implied that they will go to 16, the Big 12 is the #1 at risk conference in any realignment talk. So I wouldn't be so sure about the Big 12 going no where.

Did you ever visit the OU or Texas Free Boards over the summer? From what I read, most OU fans on their free board are ready to ditch the Big 12, and the statements their AD made at Big 12 Media days suggests they are at least sending out feelers for other conferences. If OU leaves, UT will follow suit. I don't think Texas goes anywhere unless OU does. Texas is happy running the conference. But if OU leaves there is no reason for UT to stay. If OU leaves then the Big 12 becomes Texas, a couple newbies (TCU, & Baylor), a few never were's (OSU, WVU & KSU), and some never should have been's (KU, TTU & ISU). What's the point of staying? The Big 12 will survive so long as OU and Texas stay, but I have a hard time believing they stay long term. Especially if they find themselves on the outside looking in during playoff time more often than not, which I think is possible long term.
