Tad Stryker: A fan responded to his article about Riley

Whole heartedly disagree. The gun was to his head in 1998 when he took over and wasn't allowed, by Pope Tom of Hastings, to hire his own staff. The only change in the staff was moving Gillespie to RB coach from the admin office.
Was that actually a thing that can be proven, or is that conjecture on your part?

There still seems to be some level of debate whether FS turning over Bohl for Pelini "was enough".

Although the team was better, many folks questioned whether Pelini was enough of an impact hire to beat the better teams on the schedule. (There were debates on this very board years ago, wondering if Pelini represented real progress when we lost basically the only three games that mattered that year).

Feelings on this have likely changed a whole bunch from 2003 to the post 2014 Pelini years, and probably not in favor of Bo.

So, you just win three national championships in four years, go 60-3, have a top 10 class coming in, and you think, in 2008, Frank was inclined to put together a new staff?

Ah, thank you. A good throwback read. For the most part, hits the whole FS thing dead on.

I will say, though, even with the power, FS wasn't going to be doing any major staff shuffling. That's made even more evident when you hear the behind-the-scenes stories about how FS acted after the reshuffle in the 02 season's aftermath.

Uhm. Yes. That's what happens in the real world.

Osborne hired 3 new staff members when he took over and replaced 5 more within 3 years.

Osborne did the same thing when Pelini took over. "Suggested" that he keep the Watson and Gilmore around because the offense was adequate. Except that wasn't the offense Pelini wanted to run.

What worked for you doesn't always work for others. The coaching staff didn't have the same level of respect or the same level of work ethic on the recruiting trail for Solich as they had for Osborne.

Maybe not. But that would have been his decision not one decided for him.

No, that's not what happened. There were two coaches that left. Selmer left to go from line coach to offensive coordinator at Miami. Selmer wanted Walden to go with him which he did. The third coach hired replaced the spot vacated by the Bob Father. Even Osborne said, "1973 and 1998 were similar in that the head coaching changes weren’t accompanied by major staff overhauls."

Not sure who third was but he had to replace Selmer and Walden who went to Miami - Selmer was promoted to OC - as far as the others its not really that unusual but the one I remember the most was Monte Kiffin. But I believe the majority of the rest like Kiffin left for promotions

If Solich did not agree with TO he should have gone somewhere else as it was he was handed a pretty team and staff - yes they got old but that did not happen overnight

Of course Osborne said it. Whatever worked for him would work for everyone right?

He was still able to hire someone to replace the 2 that left and himself. While maybe not a major over haul, it was 3 new faces.

If Solich had been able to replace 3 coaches in 1998, who knows what he does. The fact remains he wasn't given the option.

To pretend that everyone on Solich's staff was cool with Solich being the hand picked guy is flat wrong.

Lots of presumption here. Frank wasn't going to replace coaches that just won multiple national championships. It would be crazy to do that. Any wrangling over Frank's hands being tied in '98 is way over the top anti-Osborne tripe.

No attack here just opinion on my part. Both Devaney and Osborne were guys that you didn't say "no" to. With Osborne as HC and OC in conjunction with McBride retiring, the program was ripe for a tailspin in the wake of a power vacuum. Sure, Frank was the assistant HC, but Osborne was in control.

And before anyone wants to run with this, it's just my opinion. The recipe that allowed us to be good for so long was ultimately our undoing.

I will reiterate, I'm glad Riley is taking steps to upgrade the staff.

100% in agreement.

Who the heck is this "Tulsa Tom" you are speaking of?

If you don't know, Tulsa Tom was a poster on this board. He was contrarian by nature and felt compelled to go back and forth with people. He is likely married, without knowing his wife's name, you could refer to her as "Tom's Wife".

Or just Tom. That works too. And is more likely to be true than not.
