Stoltenberg

I somewhat agree with this. However, I would never say that it is not a priority for a defensive lineman, regardless of position, to have issues with disengaging from blocks. If you cannot disengage from blocks consistently, even as a nose tackle, you will tend to get pushed out of the zone of influence you are trying to occupy. You also do prefer if you have a NT with a good burst, who can get past a blocker, and occasionally put some pressure on the QB right up the gut. Not his primary responsibility for sure, but to say that an inability to disengage from blocks is not a big deal for a NT is a bit of an over statement I think.
EXACTLY, Which player has the chance to be a star player? One who can disengage, or one who helps block himself ?

It's something that he has to get better at to be sure.

It's one thing to be able to disengage and fight off a block as a linebacker in this defense. I disagree with this as a NT. His job is to maintain engagement and draw a double team. If he doesn't eat up blockers, then the lineman is able to get to the second level and get a block on a linebacker. If the inside backers are leading this team in tackles and not the safeties, than the DL, specifically the NT, are doing their jobs.

From what ive been reading, Mick has been dominationg our offensive linemen in practice.

Assuming this is accurate...I am not sure how to respond to this news. I can't say that I am surprised based on Cavs crew the last couple of years. :(

It's not how well you dominate, it's how well you dominate, FAST!

Overpower the center and shade the A gap. If he can get that done, then he'll be alright to do other things. My concern is he will need to be quicker with his feet, by his third step on pass defense, he's got to be wreaking havoc or causing disruption to try and change the dynamics of what the offense wants to do.

What does that say about our offensive lineman? From what I saw last year, Mick better have his game face on, because he got dominated from opposing teams about 75 percent of the time.

As I've stated numerous times on this board, the shift to the 3-4 was driven by personell more than Bob Diaco's hiring. Stoltenburg is a piece of that puzzle. He's not a pass rusher and not overly effective in pursuit. Freedom isn't in that mold either. But in this type of scheme, their job is to be disruptive at the point of attack and knock the the Linemen off schedule. Both of them will be successful.

I like your optimism! Hope this is true. I have a gut feeling it is

Riley is on record for some time as being a fan of the 3-4 and probably has been mulling players' roles in such a scheme for some time. It had to be hard to cut Banker loose from a personal stance, but then getting Diaco and getting to a defensive system that better fits the players you have more than balances it.

The only thing a 3-4 NG is supposed to do is occupy space. There's no real glory in the position. If he makes some plays in the backfield then great, but just because he isn't putting up the numbers doesn't mean he isn't doing his job in this defense
This. I'm not worried, he will out muscle a lot of guys this year. As long as he is 100% healthy I'm not worried. The NT doesn't need to get a lot of sacks. Take up space and let other guys get in the backfield.

I think people need to temper their expectations though on Damion Daniels. He needs to shed some bad weight IMO and expecting him to come in as a 18 year old and be a beast in the B1G is unrealistic.

I still think Nebraska goes hard after Folorunso Fatukasi of UConn. He was a true freshman when Diaco came in. He redshirted in 2013 and is supposed to graduate in May and have one year left. Let's hope he wants to play for his old coach for his last year and get more exposure.

You are 100% right on this. I think Mick does fine this year, but the problem is, if he gets injured, we don't really have anyone else to fill in other than Daniels, or one of the Davis twins as his backup. And yeah, unless you are that 375 pound freak of nature Tyler Shelvin, nobody comes in at 18 and dominates anything on O line or D line.
