Starting QB

I get the concern about a possible transfer but if basically everyone on this board has been saying for weeks and weeks that Lee looks like the guy, don't you think POB probably saw the same thing? Now Lee can get more reps with the 1s and become the leader of the team, that's more important than placating a guy who may or may not transfer and as of now is an inferior player.

Let's put it this way. Lee looks like a man and not a redshirt freshman.

POB is one play away in practice or games from being the starter. I hope he prepares that way because more than likely we will need him at some point. POB looked good and is just going to get better with reps.

And you heard it from???? I am sure they are all NFL scouts? I hope he is next coming of Tom Brady or whomever you want to name but saying he is NFL ready next season? I hope so as it means we should have a great year but I am not ready to cash the checks just yet.

Yes there is and was chatter in the scouting circle.

It was confirmed when Devaney shared his conversation with Archie Manning about Lee.

Yeah I agree, I'm not saying to hell with POB, I'm just saying if the staff truly believes Lee is the guy then that's all that matters. Give him the reins, keep POB involved, but if it's clear Lees the guy then manufacturing a competition to please the second best guy is a bad move. The team will see through it and it detracts from Lees growth and chemistry with the offense.

I think this is a mistake naming a starter this early. You're giving O'Brien an opportunity to transfer.
O'Brien isn't going anywhere. As a freshmen, he's guaranteed at least some playing time for a team with a good shot at playing in the B1G championship. The move gives players a chance to embrace Lee in the starting role throughout the summer and into August practice. Unifying the team behind a starter now is the right move.

Good move by Riley. No reason to screw around worrying about second teamers. He needs to win now and Lee gives him the best shot evidently. Announce it and get on with summer workouts.

We need to get back to being a program with depth at every position, including QB. That means recruiting players who are competitors and who aren't going to transfer but stay and continue to battle. Seems to me that POB has the warrior mentality when it comes to that. If I remember correctly, wasn't he underestimated pretty much his whole HS career yet he still went to the elite QB camps and more than held his own? This competition is nothing new to him.

I'll take the opposite for $100.
Ha. Nope. My predictions have proven to be the slobbering ramblings of a senile old man. But if Lee starts for two years, my guess is Gebbia starts after that. But that is based on the flimsy, flimsy gut feeling that Gebbia is better than O'Brien.

My gut feelings are only 50/50 at best. Must be all the shit I eat...

And those yoga pants photos have made my brain fried.

I think you touched on something that I also think is important in the decision making process when selecting a starting QB. The way a guy handles himself among his peers, his leadership, and those sorts of intangibles are going to play into Riley's decision. Not every young stud QB has good leadership qualities, sometimes that has to be developed, and sometimes it can't be learned either.

Someone could argue that by naming the starter now, the staff is clearly giving someone a transfer opportunity if they choose to take it. No matter how we want to speculate, clearly the coaches are not worried about the QB position if a transfer does happen.

Good call, my track record on QB's is pretty awesome. Many moons ago there was this guy named Ryan Leaf that I proudly proclaimed would be a way better pro than some dude name Peyton Manning, and we all know how that turned out. Same for Dak Prescott, I called it, I said no way he'd make it as an NFL QB, same goes for Russell Wilson. Anyone betting with me about this stuff should know what their getting into.

For those who are worried that announcing now allows a guy to transfer, wouldn't you rather have a coaching staff who is honest vs not disclosing purely to keep a guy from transferring?

Seems this staff understands transparency leads to trust and if a guy is that willing to transfer, they should be open to that.

It is a breath of fresh air to see this staff actually operate like true professionals unlike the last regime.

Read the quotes from Billy Devaney recounting his conversation with Archie Manning about a QB from Cal going to the Manning camp, Jared Goff.
"He said, 'Your guy Goff could really throw, and I'm glad he was here. But we had a boy that put him to shame. There is a boy down at Tulane named Tanner Lee.' I said, 'You've got to be kidding me. I know how Goff throws, and you're saying Tanner Lee throws the ball better?' Archie said, 'There was no comparison. You have to keep your eye on this boy from Tulane.'"
I'll concede that Billy may have been sunshine pumping a bit, but Goff was the #1 overall pick in the 2016 draft.
I think the wildcard is how well the Oline can perform in order to give Lee time to work. The offense of Riley and Langs operates at peak efficiency when the QB has receiving options at all of the positions and a QB that can deliver to them. I think we have the QB and may be on the way to developing reliable options to receive.
This will be a very different offense than the one we saw last year. I reserve the right to be excited.

It's called publicly acknowledging what everyone already knows, including Patrick.

I'm not following the coorelation between a public announcement and honesty or professional.

He could have told the QBs in private where they stood and still been honest and professional. The transparency is for fans and media and their perception.

About the only thing it does is keep the media from asking questions specific to who the starter is. The reality is it now opens up different speculation and lines of questions.

Dude, have you seen Wisconsin's Big Ten schedule? Nebraska could beat Wisconsin by 50, and the Huskers will still have little chance of winning the division.

And you might say, well they do play Michigan in November.... Sure, but that game will likely be under the lights in Madison. Michigan is rebuilding this season, and Wisconsin will be one of the most experienced teams in college football by season's end.

Really nice out of division draw for them. No losses in the B1G penciled in, much less in ink. tOSU is a high probability loss for us and Ped St doesn't look great either. For us to get to the CCG, we will likely have to beat Wisky and run the table in the rest of the division and hope that either NW or Iowa can get a win in Madison.
But then again, we don't know. That's why the kids play the games. New QB, essentially a new offense, new DC, all of these are wildcards. Things might not go so well or maybe the team will perform better than our wildest expectations.

It is so sad that this is so true

Exactly. I am guessing Cornicator had Penn State penciled in to win the East last year at this time. He also probably knew Trace McSorley was likely the best QB in the B1G last spring.

Anything can happen. The defense has new life in it this year. Our offense has a true identity for the first time in many years. Tanner Lee is a legit QB. Make no mistake about it. Guys like Archie Manning and Chris Mortensen are not blowing smoke when they talk about him. It will all come down to our O-line I believe. Let's hope that coach Cav knows what the hell he's doing

A great start would be to not get B-slapped by Iowa ...... again

We have Wisconsin, Iowa and OSU at home.
Win them.
James Franklin took over a worse situation (darn near death penalty) and was in the Rose Bowl in year 3.

It is year 3 for Riley. Beat the teams on your schedule.

You make it sound so simple. Beat a team we lost by 30 to last year, and a team we lost by 59 to last year. Easy peasy.

I will admit the Iowa game looked like we nailed it in a bit... but I sure hope you don't measure the success of this program on whether or not we beat Ohio State this year...

Here it is, a good, healthy dose of Spring Game overreaction. Let me see if I have this correct:

Gebbia is All-America, POB died, and Lee is in the NFL after his junior year. All from one scrimmage where the defense played bland 4-2-5 the whole time and didn't blitz. What the HELL is going on in this thread?????

Did we all forget Zach Darlington's *epic* Spring Game where we were pretty sure he'd win the starting job real soon? It was one practice, and there were a lot of people on both sides of the ball who won't even make the travel roster, so just taaaaaaaake it with a grain of salt, huh?

Gebbia showed flashes and he also looked like he has plenty more work to do in the weight room and on the practice field. Couple of balls like the one behind KJJ into the waiting arms of a LB can turn a game and make you forget all about a dropped pass to a TE that golly sure did come out on time. He's going to redshirt and we're going to do the QB battle all over again next year.

I thought POB looked pretty good, and also like a RS-Fr at times. I thought Lee looked good, but I don't know that I had to squint real hard to be sure it wasn't Tom Brady hiding under that helmet.

Things look promising, but the jury is still out. We still need POB to be ready and to push Lee every day. Gebbia still needs at LEAST a year on the weights.

Guessing you chose not to read the comments in the article in the journal star from Archie Manning about Lee?

The rest of your post I am good with, but the excitement around Lee is somewhat warranted, in my opinion.

I love guys who post about overreaction then use lines like "I know I didn't have to squint real hard to make sure it wasn't Tom Brady hiding under that helmet". Like every QB selected in the draft is Tom Brady level talent.

Perhaps, but if Lee is obviously better than the #1 draft pick last year he will be gone after one year. BTW...can sophomores declare for the draft? Is that the reason Lee didn't apply this year? I love having him but why not take the money now?

He could have gone this year as he is 3 years removed from high school. But even though he is talented, he hasn't played a a couple of years and when he did play it wasn't that impressive. I'm guessing he wants to get a good year under his belt for draft purposes. Also to show he isn't injury prone...

Not expecting to beat OSU or PSU. I just don't want to hear it is only year 3 as an excuse. There is no excuse for losing to Iowa or Wisconsin. If we sweep the west games I can live with the OSU and PSU results

Lee may not be the second coming of Tom Brady, but he is now looking quite steal for us on the transfer market. At the very least, he is a quality signal caller who gives the other two a chance to grow up a bit.

If our game against PSU was in Lincoln I would feel much better. But Beaver stadium, especially at night, is one of THE most intimidating places to play in I have personally seen. We will have to be true road warriors and play tough defense to win that game.

Lee is a more finished QB with a great arm. POB looked less polished, but still did some good things. Both read the progression well. Gebbia has a ton of moxie - probably the best intangibles of the 3 - but redshirting makes a ton of sense. If Lee gets injured or melts down - we'll need POB. We may need him anyway - just to make sure we have a QB with game experience. If Lee blows it up - he could leave early......etc. etc. etc.

I didn't say Nebraska is the favorite to win the West. Wisconsin clearly has the easier schedule; however, Nebraska being the second favorite to win the division gives us a "good shot". We certainly have a better chance at playing in the B1G championship this year than Penn State did before the 2016 season started.
