Last years class is a great class and make no mistake that I think they will all be great players. But we always get caught up in star rankings. And look who is gunning to be starting opening game? The lowest rated O-lineman...Boe Wilson. Few years ago everyone was going crazy over 4 and 5 star Aaron Green and who comes in and lights it up? 3 star Ameer. So, basically, its a real fine line between a 5.6 3 star and a 5.8 4 star. Don't get too hung up on star gazing. Once they get to college you never know who's going to shine and who's going to fade out. GBR

Point on !!! My opinion on Ameer was his size stats may have been low; but everything else about him made me him my favorite.
I believe it was Coach Beck ( ? ) ; that said what looks real, is real with Ameer and grabbed him up. ...... These coaches seem to have the knack to look at all of it; but dig out the diamonds. Many examples have been discussed here. Coaches go to camps and evaluate. They have pro experience and if they find the physical attributes, where they think they can develop them to have a shot at the league, they go for it. Of course they go for the known four and five stars also... But one thing that amazed me after all the hype about OSU and MI, OSU "only" landed two 5*'s last year ( 16-22 offered ) , after all their success. Translates to all the handwringing may exceed the level of potential success. GBR

Seems we have some great O coaching. I am very excited for both the O and D lines; they will vastly improve each other. IMO its almost two coaches for each side; as the D coaches expose the O line to techniques and vice-versa. GBR

Don't get me wrong, I still want the Suh's and Lamar Jackson's, Tommie Fraziers and Ahman Green's, Key Jr and Jaevon Mcquitty, Tristan Gebbia's ,Darnay Holmes and Joseph Lewis's. But the 4 and 5 star studs in HS still have to put in work right along with the 3 star boys. May the best man win! GBR

And Aaron Greene looked really good in that preseason NFL game this past week so.......wish he would have stayed. Ameer was banged up quite a bit and Green would have been a great guy to take some carries. He's probably more of an NFL WCO back than Ameer is.

Helu was another great back for us who was a mid 3-star recruit if I recall.

You point out the outliers of an otherwise clear trend, stars matter. Teams that recruit at the highest level, as measured by stars, perform the best.

So we SHOULD be caught up in star rankings yet to your point some of 4-5 stars will be a bust and 3 stars be real stars. There are outliers in every trend.

The thing about star ratings is they aren't entirely accurate but they're the best thing we got. 5 stars pan out significantly more than 4 stars, who pan out significantly more than 3 stars, etc. The more shots you get at elite guys the better because they'll always hit at a higher percentage than lower ranked guys. It's not perfect but look at the past champs, Bama, Ohio state, Fsu, Bama, Bama, auburn, Bama, Florida, LSU, Florida, Texas, etc. Im sure most of those teams had a few 3 stars or lower that helped them. I'm also sure they had a hell of a lot more 4 and 5 star guys that led those teams to titles.

He's third in line, and the only guard we signed. Good for Boe, get after it, but I believe your premise is flawed.

I actually remember quite well that in the cases of both Helu and Ameer, that there was plenty of questioning their being recruited to play running back by some on this board. Not naming any names, because I can't remember any, but I do remember both being questioned quite well.

In both cases, we already had committed higher ranked running backs in the class, and it was just assumed those were the guys and there was no reason to go after others, at least by some.

For Helu, it was Quentin Castille that was the higher ranked RB, and we all know how that turned out. I even remember speculation from some that we were recruiting him to play LB (I think some services may have had him as an Athlete, though Rivals had him as an RB), because there was no way he was going to get much playing time with the great Quentin Castille around.

With Ameer, it was Aaron Green that was the big time recruit. Much like Helu, I remember speculation from some that he was being recruited to play defense (Rivals had him as an athlete).

The point I'm making with this is that it's never 100% how a player is going to turn out, and obviously stars are useful, but aren't the end all. I'm not completely anti star rankings, I always point out in regards to star rankings that both Vince Young and Reggie Bush were 5-Star and top ranked (VY was #1 in the nation in 2002, RB was #2 in 2003), so clearly they get them right sometimes. But, as is evident in this thread, sometimes they don't tell the whole story; and lowly 3-star guys end up being the Star, and the big time 4 and 5-stars don't pan out.

And his point to me seems that you make your money at the edge. This is true in corporate overall; player development, recruiting - Coach T O was the master or this - You know all theories he concentrated on; knowing a game might come down to a kick or a special teams walk-on making a play.

If I remember right; even the top stars have a 40% washout rate. But its by definition; and the overall level of coaching and support staff has accelerated; there will be upsets, How the heck was there ever a BYU or Boise State?

This is an old argument that has been rehashed on here endlessly. And while it is true that stars are not ironclad predictors, it has been proven beyond any doubt that teams that habitually recruit 4 and 5 star guys outperform teams that habitually recruit mostly 3 star guys.

You can have very good teams that are loaded with mostly three star guys. But you wanna be up there with Bama and OSU? You better have more than that

I was also intrigued by Riley's comments yesterday where he mentioned Farniok has an outside chance of seeing playing time. Interesting since I mentioned that as possible 2 weeks ago but was told by people on here that he was not physically ready to play. I guess he is

The fact that 2 true freshman are pushing for playing time speaks well of last years recruiting class. It is also a sad testament to prior classes and oline development. True freshman should not be playing on either line and if they are truly in the mix then you have a problem

Did we really need an entire dissertation to say that some 5-stars don't work out, whereas some 3-stars do? Next you're going to break the news that some automobiles are lemons.

ya but do you remember that one time when that walk on ended up being an all american? Clearly all we need to be back is a focus on Nebraska kids and walkons

They are moving people around a lot; helps with depth, the best five; and hidden gems ( e g : a natural center ). So positions may change.

So help me with all of the moves they have made. I assume you mean those who were slated for specific position and then changed. Newbies with no established position dont fit that bill to me.

This makes sense. It is a stretch to go from "who's next on line because of injury" to the star rating system . It is more of a matter of next man up for that position versus the star power of a player.

Read the paper; Utter truth

Starter injured and out for the season. Primary backup injured and out for a month(?). Who wouldn't be gunning for the starting spot?

So we are going to find out who the 3rd guy in line is and argue about star rankings?

other than Knevel and Utter the following are our upper classmen Olineman

Hannon
D Johnson
Painter
Hahn
Whitaker

good grief

the only senior worth a crap from that recruiting class is Utter who walked on
the recruiting and roster management that Riley inherited was simply atrocious ... we are almost completly devoid of upperclassmen talent and depth along both lines

offensive line ... thin, thin, thin
Def Line - even thinner
DE - nonexistent -- walkon and had to yank a TE over last year who remains somewhat of a project

I think any scholarship player that hasn't made the 3-deep by their RS Junior year should be 'processed' through the system. Good Lord, not making the 105 roster for what, at least 2 years in a row? Should be gone!

I wonder if Paul Thurston would have played center and move Utter back to guard, if Thurston was still here.

jlb321 was talking about how thin we are. If your doctrine is play only 5 guys for chemistry, it might hurt when you need that 6th guy. Thurston is gone, and now we need him.
