Spring Game

https://www.espn.com/college-footba...a-likely-cancel-spring-game-transfer-concerns

Here you go an article from ESPN and Rhule explain why.

"The word 'tampering' doesn't exist anymore," Rhule said Saturday at his midwinter news conference. "It's just an absolute free open common market. I don't necessarily want to open up to the outside world and have people watch our guys and say, 'He looks like a pretty good player. Let's go get him.'"

Spring game is just as unnecessary as seeing this picture

Please no more Iowa pics. Enough for one day

I know I’ll catch hell for this but I feel sorry for Matt. I can’t imagine being a HC at a major program and being this insecure. His press conference was cringe.

Not wanting other coaches to see your players because you’re afraid of coaches vetting them, really? That’s like not allow your girlfriend or wife to go out with her friends because you’re affraid of guys trying to talk to her. Grow a pair man. Jeez. It’s embarrassing

Rhule’s sentiments are that of nearly every college coach in the country. No one has an interest in advertising their players for the spring portal. And the Wisconsin kid bagging out after signing a deal with the Badgers means all bets are off.

We’ll see

My guess is we’ll be one of very few major schools to tuck tail and cower from tradition re: televised spring games

Rhule - televising a spring game is an invitation to tamper from programs nationwide. Pretty sure this sentiment is broadly shared within the college fb coaching community.
I can't remember the last time someone totally unexpected made an impact statement in the spring game unless it was a walk on making a few nice plays to potentially become a contributor. In that case, outside interest would still be pretty minimal. And we should have already taken care of the guys we expect to perform with their NIL. It's a chicken shit excuse.

Good points. But go 1st team vs. 3rd team for all I care. I'm not looking to evaluate anything. I just want to see it. I want to watch the RBs breaking tackles or that new transfer LB make a great tackle in space.

This is all pretty ridiculous really. The idea that you cannot go live 11 on 11 with a roster of 105 four months ahead of the season. Do they go live? Then sell tickets. Otherwise, say that we're a finesse program that doesn't go live. Or we do go live but fans are not welcome to watch it.

We do go live but fans are not welcome to watch it for 2000 Alex lol

In the world of NIL and the prospect of losing a depth/rotational kid or starter to tampering, coaches look at their spring game as advertising their players for other teams.

If the argument is injuries, well that is just lame. Clearly they don't want anyone to get hurt and the fans don't want that either

But, this has become the 8th home game. It is a great time the weather is usually awesome, the college girls are usually dressed in almost nothing (when I went to UNL they dressed like Kurt Cobain).

It is or it has become an event. It is an event for the fans, for the players, for kids, for the local economy.

The last thing, I think, that you want to do is do anything that slowly starts to change the support from the fans.

When I was at UNL the spring game was not really a big deal and now look at it, it is packed and Lincoln is rocking that day. I just can't see why they would want to lose that.

I think you said it your post but the idea that you can't play a game with 105 players is ****ing nuts.

HS teams do their "soap scrimmage" with way less players.

I was one who didn't really have a problem with it if they didn't play. That said I'm not in Nebraska and have never seen a spring game live. After reading your response you have kinda brought me around to your way of thinking. Guess I never looked at it that way.

I think HCMR is looking at it based on injuries (they happen in practice as well). But MAINLY the fact that he doesn't want other teams basically seeing his kids. If we are being real about it spring games have now become "auditions" for other teams to scope and then go after your players. To that I can understand him.

There has to be some middle ground o would think.

I think as long as it’s OK for a kid to walk out on one school and then just enroll in another (NIL dough pre-negotiated under the table), it’s kind of checkmate on a spring game with lots of plays from scrimmage.

If we get better and compete for a spot in the playoffs I couldn’t care less about the spring game. If we continue to suck and barely make it into shitty lower tier bowls than I have a big problem with it. That’s how it works Rhule. You win most people will be fine with this, if you don’t it’s another reason you should be fired.

That's spot on. If Rhule wins big, he can do about whatever he wants I guess. At this point, optimism is high. We are winning the off season. Unfortunately, about every other team is as well and it all gets decided on the field. I like the comment that was said earlier. There's a crowd. It's like a dress rehearsal. Kick that field goal into a sea of red fans. Catch that pass with thousands watching.
