Here are some quick notes to pass along from Nebraska's post-game press conference following Saturday's annual Red-White Spring Game...

***Head coach Mike Riley said the spring game was a good day for the team due to a lot of factors, maybe most importantly in giving so many young players their first taste of playing in front of that type of crowd.

***On the quarterback play, Riley said he thought each one made some plays and missed some plays, and the majority of the mistakes were mental rather than physical.

***Riley said he does have a quarterback pecking order, but won't reveal it at this point.

***Riley said Tommy Armstrong did a good job this spring learning the new offense, and his confidence never wavered throughout the spring. He said it's a tough situation for a QB to try and learn a whole new offense midway through his career, but Armstrong has handled it well and should only continue to get better.

***Riley said Zack Darlington not only got a lot more comfortable as spring ball went on, but even within the spring game as well. Riley said Darlington was playing with confidence, has a quick release and is obviously a very good athlete.

***As for AJ Bush, Riley said it was clear Bush was nervous playing in front of such a big crowd early on, but he also showed flashes of his ability as the game went on.

***Riley said not to read too much into Johnny Stanton not taking his first snap until the fourth quarter. He said the coaches had a tough task of trying to get every QB enough reps, and that was just how it played out.

***Riley said safety Nate Gerry suffered knee injury prior to the spring game, which is why he was held out. He said Gerry would be back to 100 percent by mid-June.

***Riley said punter Sam Foltz actually got sick in the second half, which was why NU went for it so many times on fourth down.

***Riley said he's never received a Gatorade bath following a scrimmage before, but noted he made it a point to move over to the Red sideline before the game ended to make sure he started his NU coaching career on the right foot with a win.

***Riley said the staff would meet with each player individually over the next month and go over specific goals for the offseason. He said NU would resume its strength and conditioning work next week.

***Riley said he wasn't surprised with how well Terrell Newby played Saturday, as he's been noticing Newby since midway through spring ball. Riley said Newby fits what they need at running back, as he's a versatile player who can pass block and catch passes.

***Riley said the defensive game plan was pretty vanilla, which was on purpose. Riley said the staff wanted to establish their base scheme and just see what players could do.

***Riley said there will be a post-spring depth chart at some point, but he wasn't sure when it would be released. He said the toughest position to fill out was linebacker, and that the incoming freshmen would definitely play a factor at that unit.

***Riley called Foltz a "terrific athlete and punter", adding that he's coached three punters on to the NFL, and Foltz might be as consistent as any punter he's been around.

We'll have much more from today's spring game up later on this evening…
