... but is pushing for possible playing time this year. Threw for 300 yards in the spring game as a high schooler, now tossing TDs to starters and driving the field in two minute drills in week two of fall camp.

Hope every WR we are recruiting is taking notice.

You heard it here first. If Lee doesn't go pro, Gebbia will push him for the starting job next year and might just win it. He's that good.

So next year it's possible to have SR QB Lee usurped by a redshirt freshman out of Cali?
I believe it is possible depending on Lee's performance this year. Of course I hope Lee is lights out and touchable next fall if he decides to stay (means we had a good season). However, think about this. Pretend you know nothing about the Nebraska players in the Spring Game. Before I show you the tape of the game I erase the TD bomb Lee threw to Spielman and the desperation pass Gebbia threw to KJJr on a fourth down that was intercepted. I tell you the shorter, skinnier QB plays much of the game against the #1 defense and the taller QB plays all the game against the #2, 3, and 4 defenses. Who do you pick as the better QB? Granted I am altering the data a little, but Gebbia had a heck of a Spring Game.

I'll be the first to admit I wasn't totally sold on Gebbia when he committed. I figured he had potential but I didn't buy any hype on him. Since then everything I've heard from him has made me a believer. He's going to be something special one day. I still stand by the belief that if he has to play this season without RSing it would be a bad sign of the status of the season though.

Gebbia is good but I don't think he's going to get his shirt pulled unless Lee is a total bust/injured and we're looking at #2/3 to carry the water.

Just perusing through some of the more reliable posters on various boards this seems to be a combination of praise for Gebbia, a way to keep that 2/3 battle going (POB could get complacent knowing there's no one really behind him this redshirt year), and not necessarily a signal that Gebbia is going to be #2 this year.

Just from a QB politics angle, I don't think MR/DL want to put Gebbia #2 before any of the lights in the stadium go on, and be looking at a situation next year where POB has aleady transferred and Lee is now a pro. Gebbia/Bunch/2018 Walk on, is a thin QB room.

This is all true and makes logical sense. However, it should be a reminder that maybe they should recruit a QB (as well as some other positions).. or just get more wide outs

I would put my money on TG redshirting and on POB being No.2 behind TL. Sounds like Langs really wants more out of POB.

What is POB's problem? Does he have Johnny Stanton Disease or has the frustration just overtaken the effort? I have to remind myself that he really is just a RFr. I for one do not want to run him off.

Signed,

Harrison Beck, Cody Green, Brion Carnes, Johnny Stanton, Jamal Turner, Patrick Witt, Zac Lee, and Sam Keller.

Let's see how he does in an actual real game first before anointing him as the next great Nebraska QB
I do appreciate all the posters who want to squelch any enthusiasm whatsoever on this board. You are awesome!

I hope POB isn't thinking like this. That he needs pushed from a true freshman to keep his #2 spot. Both him and TL sat on the bench last year. TL is NOT a returning starter. I would hope he is pushing to be number 1 instead of protecting his number 2 status.

Gebbia has the best intangibles at QB in the post Osborne era - super impressed at what he did in the Spring Game.

lol Gebbia will not start over Lee in 2018 if Lee stays. Pump the breaks folks. I'm a fan of Gebbia's like everyone else but he's no where near D1 ready.

While I think Gebbia will eventually be a very good QB for us. He's 185lbs soaking wet. He needs to put on another 30lbs before he will be able to withstand the punishment he's going to take behind our offensive line

I have plenty of enthusiasm for Tanner Lee, who has proven himself as a D-I QB already.

Gebbia was a fine high school QB, like all of the guys listed above. History has shown it's wise to keep a healthy dose of skepticism until he proves himself at the college level. I'm sorry if that offends the Red Rovers of the board.

No worries, just makes me laugh that when some on here are excited about players' potential, it's not long before someone comes along to tell us to not get too excited.

Edit: I'm not saying you're wrong, you listed great examples... it just makes me laugh is all.

Before we say T.Lee is a top 10 pick and T.Gebbia is the next great thing; can we see them play a game first? I dont know its just a thought.
Uh, no. As one poster says. ... Happiness is seeing great things happening. Seems many want to " curb the enthusiasm". I think you may have come across as more of a wet blanket than you wanted too. There is a time to let the kids run and the fans stand up. GBR

I was very impressed with Gebbia at the spring game....and liked what I saw from POB for that matter as well. But Lee would really have to shit the bed for either one to over take him.

I think most everybody can agree debating which of three good QBs is best is a good "problem" to have and something we are unfamiliar with for a long time. In the Spring Game 3rd Q I sent a note to a relative who is more of a Xs and Os fan than I. He was at the game. I said on TV Gebbia looked better than the other two and he said he was just about to text me that he felt the same.

There's a different tune in Lincoln this year. I think it obvioulsy has to do with how much Riley and Langs have improved the QB position the past 3 years in recruiting Tanner, Tristan and Patrick. Not too many D1 schools have that kind of QB talent. I should also add that the Diaco hire which, whether you like it or not, will be a determining factor in Riley's tenure here. Diaco is going 1000% right now and it is evident in the manner he speaks, the way the players have a shift in mentality (i.e how Aaron Williams—the QB of our D—talks about the shift) and in the manner the press portrays him. I don't believe everything the press says (because more often than not it's something the average fan can deduce themselves) but there's a different tune in their stories this camp. This staff means business.

Whether or not this preseason camp is foreshadowing that we go 7-5, 8-4, 9-3 or 10-2 (only way we win 11 games is with a B1G Championship or New Year's bowl win), it's not hard to realize that there has been a definite culture shift in the Nebraska football program. Safe to say, I'm ready for college football to start again.

You mean outside of the top 20 right?

Yes and no. Yes because there are 20 teams ahead of us with as good, better or more experienced QBs. No because most teams don't have the depth and quality of QBs that we currently have.

Most teams dont have a rs freshman and a true freshman who haven't played in a game or a 5th year junior who hasn't played in a year? Ok gotcha.

i watched the first half of the spring game last night. All three looked good, making some short throws and hitting some deeper balls on the seams.

I guess people get criticized if they are too positive, or too negative. It's no fun if everyone is just a flatline devoid of strong opinions either way. Oh yeah, Iowa Sucks.
Nailed it.

And as you know, I'm part of the posse that goes after the negative nellies... I just want so dang bad for these coaches to be successful that whenever I see negativity my reflex is to stomp it out. Sometimes I feel like it's warranted, but sometimes not.

Kudos to guys like Tuco, who seem to be able to be more objective overall.

I wonder what this board would have been like in 1992. "Frazier will but a great QB someday, but if he starts any games this year we're in serious trouble".

Hell I got called out for apparently saying the back up NT sucks. Which I didn't exactly do. I did opine that he will be passed up by more talented players which is a tad different than saying he sucks.

Admittedly, I typically fall on the sunshine pumping side of things. Again I see no harm in being optimistic in August, there is plenty of time to be negative if the season goes down hill. Not necessarily a huge fan of The Riley hire, I like the guy and don't mind his offense, just not what I was expecting. But since I wanted Pelini out in a bad way, I look at this as the football gods saying be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.

To be honest, I'm a tad nervous about the starting NT. I love the kid, and know his extended family very well, but his knee history has me a little worried about his durability in the trenches. Nothing against him, it's just a matter of maybe not being blessed with knees that can stand up to the rigors of playing NT at the D1 level.

Plus, I know he has put on some size since last year, but he got pushed around sometimes in some of our bigger games last year. I hated seeing that, because knowing his relatives, we send clippings back and forth, and I am pulling for the kid big time to be able to maintain the middle. I'm hopeful that having 2 inside backers will provide the run support that will allow our D to plug things up.

And yes, I'm in agreement that not having a steady backup doesn't exactly generate a great deal of confidence regarding depth in the middle.
