First year head coaches struggle at this school.

Bo Pelini started his first year here at 3-3, and he had an easier non-conference schedule.

He dropped his first two conference games, including his Big 12 opener 52-17 to Missouri.

I guess my point is, we've been here before. Look at the roster for that 2007 team and tell me there's more talent on this squad than there was on that one. I dare you. MIke Riley is struggling because he's new to the program, has a lot of players who can't run his system and because we're not very good.

Pelini inherited a "cupboards full" situation and started 3-3. If Riley wins this Saturday (and Wisconsin is hardly a world beater this year) they'll have the same exact records in their first six games. And Riley will be starting with a better conference record.

Bo's wins that year weren't impressive by any means, but Mizzou and Texas Tech were Top 10 teams at the time they beat us and Virginia Tech went on to win the Orange Bowl. A little less embarrassing than losing to Illinois. Riley can't afford to lose to the other cellar-dwellers left on the schedule (Purdue, Rutgers).

Without going back and reviewing, I think you would take Pelini's roster in 08 over the current one.

Getting pounded by a top 15 team is one thing. Getting beat by a bad Illinois team in a stadium half full of Husker fans is another.

Shouldn't we remind them that the record the year before was 5-7?

No. Because record the previous year doesn't actually have a bearing on the current season. The talent on that 5-7 team was better than a 5-7 team. That's why the coaches were fired.

I don't think the cupboard was as full as you think. This was a 5-7 team. Take a look at the roster in 2007 and the depth chart in 2008. A lot of holes. Also as others said, they lost to 2 top 10 teams and one in OT. At one point Bo could coach until he mentally lost it

In himdsight it appears it was full...but how much of that was based on coaching up? Anytime a team finishes 5-7 there are major holes that need addressed. Now going from a 9 win team to 5-7 while still addressing some holes...is a little bogus if you ask me.

I could have managed that last minute better than the guy getting paid almost 3 mil for something he's been doing for a couple of decades. First year coach or not, that was pitiful.

Exactly. Bo inherited a poor 5-7 team. Riley, on the other hand, inherited a team that had won at least 9 games in each of the previous 7 seasons.

Since TO retired, I would say that only two HCs have struggled in their first year at NU - Bill C and Riley. BC inherited a 10-3 team and Riley inherited a 9-4 team. Both struggled by trying to implement a pass oriented offense when that is/was obviously not the strength of the team.

Bo started 3-3, but finished 9-4. From what I've seen so far this year, we'll be lucky to become bowl eligible.

It's too early to tell, but I hope Riley has the common decency to leave the next coach with at least as much talent as BC left Bo before he's given the boot.

If Riley has a losing record he should be fired. Sorry, but this is a business and he is paid millions to win.

He inherited a team with Suh and MULTIPLE future NFL players on defense and some in the offensive line. He inherited Niles Paul and Roy Helu. Tell me again how bare the cupboards were for poor poor little Bo that went 3-3 and to start the season. A very average Missouri team just absolutely embarrassed Bo and Carl and then finished the year against maybe the weakest B12schedule possible that year.

No comments on Riley? You know, our coach?

Look at the frickin depth chart Riley inherited on defense and compare it to all the NFL players Bo inherited then spew some more BS. Callahan left Bo a boat load of talent to work with and you know it. The problem for Bo started when he had to start working with his own recruits and this year would have been a disaster for Bo too.

I don't care about all the Bo talk, etc. but talent was often used as an excuse for spankings he took early on. We know now that the defense had plenty of talent, at that time though it was the same old cupboards are bare routine that we're so accustomed to with new coaches.
