I've read from more than one good poster that our current crop of WRs can't separate, thus contributing greatly to our offensive woes. I find this new narrative interesting, for a couple of reasons:
* Our top four WRs are a pair of 4-stars and a pair of 3-stars. That should be good enough in the BIG.
* Last year, the narrative was that Tommy was so terrible, and that our WRs were "wide-open" all over the field. Wow, were Westy and Reilly THAT much more explosive than our current guys? Or was that narrative unfair?
I'm not trying to call anyone out; honestly I'm not. I knew all along that Tommy wasn't as bad as many on here tried to make him out to be, and I definitely knew Tanner Lee wasn't going to live up to the incredible hype many on here bestowed upon him.
But enough about that. If our WRs are, in fact, unable to separate this season, we have bigger problems than any of us thought, because 2 4-stars and 2 3-stars is going to be about as good as it gets with our WR recruiting. Sorry, that's just the truth. Anyone who thinks we're consistently going to pull 5-star WRs away from USC, UCLA, Florida State, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc., etc. is delusional. We as a fan base simply need to be a little more realistic.
So if our WRs can't get open this year, and if they were wide-open last year, what's the difference? Could it be that because of our lack of mobility at the QB position, opposing d-coordinators can completely erase "defending QB run game" from their whiteboard the week they play us, and focus solely on pass defense?
If Riley is let go, I sure hope we get a coach that re-incorporates the QB run game. Because, while guys like Lord, Martinez and Armstrong were far from perfect, their legs won us a lot of games over the years - and because of their legs, it opened up the play-action pass game.
You can't tell me our current WRs wouldn't be good enough to break free if LBs and safeties constantly had their eyes in the backfield while worrying about QB run responsibilities.
