Snow Day?

All of this snow measurement should be a reminder to everyone: as always , nobody tell the WAGs how much 6” actually is
Reminds me of a comment I had for a guy I was playing in golf league. One of those guys that had to make sure you weren't getting closer to that hole 400+ yards away by being forward of the tee markers.
"Hey you might want to move your ball back, you're like 6 inches ahead of the markers."

"X, if you think that is 6 inches, I feel bad for your wife."

Exactly, no more actual snow days is kind of lame.
I tell my classes that all the time. I have the option to teach online during snow days but I would never do that. Snow days are fun, magical, they help make memories.

I think it was even cooler back in the day when you would not know about a snow day until you heard it on the radio in the morning but still, snow days are amazing for the little kids and for HS students it is a chance for a break or to hang at a friends house all night and just be a kid.

Yea, and the same guy would miss a 6inch putt down hill when it really counts..

I don't get the bravado around killing yourself to get to work/school in X amount of snow. I mean sure, most Nebraskans handle it better than in places where they get little to no snow, but that's just common sense, not exceptional achievement. Even if you can handle yourself in the weather, a bunch of others can't, and work can generally wait a day or so to be worth the hassle. I understand there's plenty of jobs where that's not generally an option but there are a substantial chunk that are.

When I was at Iowa State 20 years ago or so, we had learned they had only canceled classes 8 days over the course of being a University (so 100+ years). I was kind of let down by that, but I missed enough class of my own volition that I guess it didn't matter what they did or didn't do. EDIT: I guess part of the fun of being an adult is giving yourself a snow day.

Kids all have laptops now and can get assignments at home, so administrators nowadays are not going to risk the safety of students and bus drivers.
Its not just the kids, its the parents too. My kids are squarely elementary school age, and we're fortunate that my wife doesn't work. So it doesn't really matter what the school schedule is.

Given her druthers, a snow day is a day she doesn't have to get everyone ready to go in less than ideal conditions, so its something of a break for her too. Plus the not so insignificant risk of, oh we got everyone to school but now its a 2 hour early release kind of a thing. That just ****s up everyone's day. ESPECIALLY if you are a 2-income household. One of you just spent half the morning getting the kids to school and you were way late to work, and now they'll be home in 90 mins. Most of my friends who have 2-income households, generally one of them is down with a remote/day off to watch their kids.

The general advancement of society has generally changed attitudes about where/when we put forth substantial effort to do a thing. In this modern age of remote jobs/learning, for most its not worth the hassle of trying to get somewhere, if you don't really have to be there.

I mean I get it it. Stay at home. Don't go out. Stay safe and warm and cozy in your home.
But the voices man. The voices begin to get really loud after months on end of the same 4 walls. No human contact. Nothing to break up the monotony. Just the repeated ticking of the clock pounding its way into your head. Day after day.
And then....the voices.

Anyway, enjoy your day off!

'Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 9 to 17 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph'
Looking at the radar and its just pumping it in from the south again.
Man, after 2 blizzards back 2 back, a snowstorm AFTER that, over 2 feet total from 3 flippin storms....its a little ridiculous. We were just getting dug out in some places in the country.
When will this global warming end?

I know every generation says this, but it'll be bullshit if kids get a snow day for probably what ends up being 6". Both in HS and at UNL we never had actual snow day and there were a few days where it literally snowed 12"+ and buses were getting stuck and weak as Harvey still wouldn't call classes. **** you Perlman!
My job requires me to be the decision maker with this issue, and it got me thinking about the difference between now and the "back in my day" folks like me who were born in the 70s, 80s or before. I'm pretty sure we were "tougher" because we knew it would take a literal blizzard for a snow day for us.

Then society became incredibly litigious, and now everyone can and will file lawsuits if anything were to happen during their travels. "Kids these days" have simply become accustomed to being closed in these scenarios. Now, most places just close to both:

A) Mitigate the potential for any lawsuits

and,

B) Avoid the incessant questions from employees and students about whether or not "we're closing"

The calls/emails that superintendents get (and social media posts) are insane, they can't win when it comes to closing or not closing.

Well these days some of them do stupid song and dance announcements via social media. If kids are gonna get the day off they should have to at least wake up early and sweat it out while obsessively watching the scroll at the bottom of the tv

Right???

That Channel 10/11 school closing scroller was Must-See TV.

Right up there with Mark Ahmann reciting the Friday night game scores.

With technology as it is, this becomes such an easy and defensible decision. No more blaming the weather to get out of school or work.

'97 in Omaha was pretty bad also.. I don't know if Halloween was cancelled but I think it was right around that time
That was during the Kansas game, October 25th. By the 31st it was at least above freezing during the day, but my neighborhood didn't get power restored until that night, just in time for the Oklahoma game the next day. Other places had to wait even longer to get the power lines back up. Halloween was definitely impacted, if not quite canceled.

In my part of Maryland at least, the notification is all done by text message, but also other outlets.

Oh well. They don’t have to take that job. I’ve never emailed or contacted a superintendent. I do get a chuckle out of the woke emails Steve Joel used to send out, and now his replacement has done as well.

The Millard School District has been set up for elearning since 2018ish, it’s an easy call for them to cancel and keep buses off the roads. They generally wait to announce until other districts start announcing.

Last superintendent for Millard schools went to Millard South, as did I, he was a year ahead of me....we got into a fight when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore....sophomores were running laps in gym, I was shooting baskets....for whatever reason he pushed me in the back on his way by, next time around he went to do it again and I took my best swing, connected, knocked him right down on his butt, then it was broken up...that was back when you didn't get sent to principal's office, just got told to knock it off. Later that evening he came to my house with some of his friends and invited me outside to finish what we started....I looked out and saw 2 or 3 other guys and declined the invite and closed the door....many years later I ran into him at church and asked if he remembered, he did not, but he apologized anyway....told all 3 of my kids who went to Millard South you have the only dad in the whole school district that beat up the superintendent. Hahaha. He is actually a really great guy and have nothing but respect for him...but it happened. It was weird to hear his voice on the recordings when they called to cancel school for snow though all those years later.
