Smothers to the portal

Rhule & Satt didn't hide anything on Saturday.

The QB depth chart:

1 - Sims/CT
3 - Haarberg
4 - Purdy/Woche

Wasn't Purdy in before HH?
chronologically, yes.

however, HH backed up Sims and played exclusively with the 1s and against the 1s

purdy led the 3rd/4th teamers against the 3rd/4th team defense

That isn’t official. It’s a random national “analyst” repeating a rumor. ☹️ Hope he isn’t that doofus who was posting on here wanting to be first.

No, it is a 247 guy. But here is our old friend nebraskafaninwi/antirowboat/nationanalyst twitter.

Looks like he fancies himself a Big Ten insider these days.

I think purdy's status as having already transferred once (even though the NCAA are toothless) makes it a lot harder for him to leave
I also think Rhule thinks he could win some games with a game manager mobile QB like Purdy if he had to. He’s a very bright guy. Some say we would only play 2 QBs but that’s cutting it razor thin depth wise to only have 4 guys. Woche is a walk on camp arm. Too bad Synek left.

Does anyone know if HC MR indicated he will be over this much every year? I get it that they want to build the best possible roster every year. Or is he so high over this year because he is new?

It would be hard to be this much over every year. He gets to cut guys this year, because he is in his first year at the school. He won't be able to do that after this year. I would expect us to be more like 5 over a year moving forward.

Good luck to Smothers. He’d have won the Iowa game in ‘21 if our special teams understood the difference between left and right.
Or if he didn't tend to flop at crunch time. I saw him do enough cross brained stuff against Minnesota last year, when it looked like we might mount a comeback, to understand why he didn't challenge Martinez and CT on the depth charts.

Seemed like a good dude and honestly, got a shot to win the starting Husker gig. Didn’t stand out when the moment presented itself. That moment is gone. Good luck to him.

Exactly. He can win games with his run threat and a RB run game and play action passes.

Still trying to wrap my head around how Smothers would have 'won the game' if it wasn't for other circumstances. He threw the ball right to an Iowa played when the game was on the line. I think, given his scant playing time after that, the coaches were afraid to give him any important assignments. He never really played after that until the Minnesota game this last year. In which, again when we had a chance to take a lead and he had ample room to use his speed to get a first down he wound up and threw a pass to no one out of bounds.
He just tended to make big mistakes when the pressure was on. He really should have considered a position switch to db more. Remember Tony Veland?

he also hit the hip of a would-be ball carrier on a botched handoff turned lost fumble to start the entire momentum swing

If only our bird brain former coaches would have started him from the beginning and he would have had more reps etc all that would have been smoothed out.
The WR ran the wrong route
Whipple didn’t give him good okay calls to take advantage of his skill set.
The would be RB was in the wrong place.

Not a BIG qb. Should go FCS or maybe a MAC caliber school. I think he could tear it up at NDSU or SDSU.

I had 911 waiting every time he took a snap in case my heart went out. Good kid though and team player. Curious if he turned down a position switch.
