I was disappointed in Williams in the 2nd half of the season. I would put McGahee up there for top pass rusher. Seems like he has a unique ability to not only get the sack but for knocking the ball out.
he drew a lot of chips from TEs and backs in the 2nd half
clearly opponents were gameplanning for him on passing downs
freed up the big guys and allowed Sherman to go 1on1 (he didn't win much)
I'll add this and lean on actual football minds (like @PeliniTheCrutch) to correct me if I'm wrong, but:
for all the 4-3 traditionalists out there, that base scheme has all but been phased out of college football by offenses (even in the plodding B1G)
a change to a 4-man front will look basically exactly the same as we've been seeing from a personnel standpoint:
a strong-side 7 technique(EDGE), 3 technique, 2i or 0(NOSE) and 5 technique with 2 LBs and 5 DBs (or 4 DBs and Rover/light LB)
3-man fronts were pretty rare for us despite running a "3-3-5". just like having 3 traditional LBs on the field will be pretty rare for a "4-3" team.
base offense these days is 3 wide, which means base defense is nickel.

Sherman did win a lot of 1 on 1's, especially later in the year. He was defensive MVP against Iowa in my book, just completely dominant.
A 4-3 base defense can work if the linebackers are on the faster side. I was thinking Shavers-Gbayor-McGahee as backers and Princewill/Butler/Williams as edge rushers. Against pass happy teams, you can always go nickel, and it would offer a stout run defense if subbing in a run stopper along the DL.
voluntarily putting an LB on a slot receiver is nearly as stupid as not covering him at all.
"pass happy" doesn't really have anything to do with it. it's a personnel thing, and 3 WR sets are the foundation of nearly every offense going.
we can run a 4-3 against Michigan and basically nobody else in the country as a base set.
I would expect Shavers and McGahee be able to hold their own if they were matched against a slot receiver or tight end. Again, you'd be running plenty of nickel and dime against passing teams as well. If the 4-3 were really as vulnerable against basic passing offenses as you say, then there is no way it would have stuck around as long as it did.

I think we're being pedantic at this point. Plenty of teams call their defense a base 4-3 even though they may use nickel more often. Just as teams will state a base 3-4 defense although it may end up being 3-3-5 more often. Nickel and dime is essential to cover the pass. I don't think anyone is arguing that.

Williams did one thing and one thing only. He was terrible against the run and if they ran he regularly lost contain. My biggest beef though were the ill timed off sides penalties which seemed to happen virtually every game. I think he can mature and get better. I hope he sticks around.
well, yea. he's a 3rd down pass rushing specialist.
more than 1/3 of his tackles this year were sacks.
he's not playing on 1st and 2nd down and he's not paid to stop the run.
I know we are all having problems grasping college football as a pro sport. As a pro sport they could hire Pot, Roast, Kettle, and Black to coach the DL. And if they needed even more help, they could hire All the King’s Horses and All the King’s Men.
I hope you aren’t seriously offended because it would indicate a certain level of denseness and/or failure to read the thread.💩
