Nebraska's late-dual comeback attempt fell short Sunday afternoon, as North Carolina won a pair of decisions in the final two matches to seal a 22-14 victory over the Huskers at the Devaney Center.
No. 8 Chad Red Jr. (141) led the Huskers with a technical fall, while No. 10 Isaiah White (165), Beau Breske (174) and No. 6 Taylor Venz (184) won decisions as the Tar Heels took six of the 10 matches.
The 12th-ranked Huskers, who never led in Sunday's dual, had life after an exciting turn of events in the overtime period at 174 pounds. With UNC leading 16-8, Breske fought North Carolina's Adis Radoncic to a 1-1 tie after three periods and a sudden-victory period. After Breske gave up an escape when he was in control in the tiebreaker period, the Husker grappler struggled to break Radoncic's grip until the final seconds, when he flipped the Tar Heel to score a reversal with six seconds left and win the match, 3-2, Breske's first-career dual victory.
White's victory at 165 pounds and Venz's win at 184 bookended Nebraska's 9-0 run to close to within 16-14 with two matches to go. White defeated Clay Lautt by a 10-4 decision to move to 13-2 overall, including 4-0 in duals, as he is the only Husker to have won his match in each of NU's first four duals. Venz scored a takedown just past the 30-second mark in the first sudden-victory period to clinch a 13-11 decision, improving his record to 13-2 and 3-1 in duals.
The comeback effort ended there, as UNC won the last two matches by decision to defeat NU 22-14. UNC's Danny Chaid won a 6-2 decision over Eric Schultz at 197 pounds, before David Jensen, who needed a technical fall or pin to give the Huskers a chance, fell by a 3-2 decision to Cory Daniel to give UNC the final margin.
UNC jumped to an early 6-0 lead after winning decisions at 125 and 133 pounds, but Red got the Huskers on the board with a 16-1 tech fall, as the redshirt freshman scored three takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls over A.C. Headlee.
Before the Huskers could make a move in the team score, the Tar Heels snuffed out NU's momentum and extended their lead to 16-5 with a major decision at 149 and a pin at 157. Fourth-ranked Troy Heilmann won a 13-4 major decision over No. 8 Colton McCrystal, while UNC's Kennedy Monday won a pin over seventh-ranked Tyler Berger in 1:31.
The Huskers take a few weeks off before competing again following New Year's, as the Huskers will travel to Illinois for its first conference matchup against the Fighting Illini on Friday, Jan. 5. The dual is set to begin at 8 p.m. and will be televised on BTN. It will also be available on BTN2Go and the BTN mobile app. The Huskers will return home that same weekend to host Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 7.
