Shots fired

Currious response… Of course they spend a boatload of money. And they have championships to show for it. But Ohio State and Texas also spend boatloads of money, with nothing to show for it. That’s the point being made…
I’d opine they have a lot to show for it. tOSU has been in the playoff picture most every year, and Texas is rising fast. They’ll be a perennial contender for the foreseeable future.

Ohio State supports more sports programs than any other school in the country which is why it spends so much money.

Low budget success:

“In its 25 years as a varsity sport, Nebraska has become one of the top programs in the nation, winning eight national titles, including six NCAA Championships. Under Paul Klempa, who succeeded legendary coach Bill Straub in 2019, the Huskers have continued that dominance, winning a national title in 2021 and having back-to-back bowlers named the NTCA Division I Player of the Year in 2020 and 2021.”

Here’s what wins championships
1) proximity to elite talent
2) great talent evaluation, coaching and development
3) fat budget
4) great fan support and university backing
How did Nebraska ever win a NC or any Championship with that formula?

We weren't in proximity to elite talent.
We didn't have a fat budget - Tom gave his raises to his assistants and they stayed.

I would give you the other three.

5) a little bit of luck doesn't hurt. Who knew that recruiting class/team would develop into what they became in '94? Surely not me.
A big part of that was timing, system, and player development. I will argue forever that Nebraska had a system that made them unique and allowed for less talent to achieve more. Look at the receivers on the 90's teams.

The Big 8/12 was a fraction of what it became and not even close to what the BIG10 is morphing into.

Those days are long gone, and the writing was on the wall in the late 90's early 2000's when the KU/KSU/CO/MU cake walk all became less of a guaranteed win.

Those days are gone. We won because we had a unique system and prop48. lol

don't forget about the A&M cult
I think you have to spend a boatload of money and have a very good coach. I don't think A&M and Texas have had the latter. I think Day is a good enough coach and will eventually win a title with the Buckeyes. (Not sure Harbaugh is. He seems to get immersed into too many dramas)

Stupid......how many times has Ohio State been in the playoff compared to Washington? Just because they havent won it all the past few times doesn't mean they're not successful. Washington's last championship was 1991 if I remember right? Don't get me wrong, I love their coach and they sure look like a great team, but have yet to play a big dog. Appears first ranked opponent this Saturday for this season

Not sure if you're aware, but only 1 team can win a championship each year.
I’m aware that in the last 10 years Alabama has several national championships and Georgia has 2 as well. Texas has none and OSU has 1 maybe… not sure when they won under UM.

Partial qualifiers and having a cutting edge strength and conditioning program played a large part in Nebraska's success during the 90's.

Washington kicked Michigan State's teeth down their throat. Based on that, they looked pretty good.

In the last 10 years Ohio State has won the national championship and in the years after have gone 12-1, 11-2, 12-2, 13-1, 13-1, 7-1, 11-2, and 11-2. This includes beating Washington in the Rose Bowl in 2019. Don't think they are a good example of not winning.

and.....let's see them go play Ohio State. A bit of talk today from the newly added PAC12 schools and it really reminds me of Frost being a cocky punk. To win in the BIG, you're going to need a defense because the offenses will keep the ball away from you as much as possible. We've learned this the hard way as need a lights out D and solid special teams too. Lots of games come down to FGs

I was going to post something like this. They have been in the playoff or one game away pretty much the entire time it's been in place. Not that I care to defend OSU. They are fine. Now we will get to listen to Ryan Day next time he is interviewed, all fired up about the comments. I wish he would just say, we have won alot of football games, but he is entitled to his opinion and ask for the next question.

Pathetic. Look at all those losses. They lose every year. They're losers.

lol are you really arguing Ohio State has "nothing to show for it"? That is a pretty crazy take. I'd kill for Nebraska to have a national title and 5 conference titles over the last 10 years.

Yeah they are probably the biggest underachieving program. They spend a ton of money and recruit very well, but have mediocre results. They are 9-9 the last two years. By comparison Ohio State has only lost 9 games total since the start of the 2017 season. We'll see how long Jimbo lasts. With his crazy buyout he'll be there longer than their fans wish. Probably the dumbest contract extension in college football history.

I am surprised the Washington State AD has time to comment. I understand he is busy with getting an audit done of all the booze that mysteriously went missing right before Moos left.

Fair enough, I have seen the light and realize it was a bad take on my part. I was merely referencing national championships, which was clearly not the only measure to make my post on.

But I will die on the Texas hill. Fair enough? :)

Sure A&M and Texas have been huge letdowns(not to me, I enjoy watching them lose) considering their budgets and fanbases.

You have more faith in Sark than I do. Texas several years ago put the full-press on hiring Saban away from Alabama. Saban at Texas would have been even better than his time in Tuscaloosa. I don't see Sark winning it all at Texas. He will win a lot of game but look at last Saturday. Texas is clearly more talented than OU, yet they still lost.

yeaaaaahhhh I'm more noticing how since NIL money gets to buy players, Alabama has declined (as Saban kinda predicted would happen, because he understands Math), and Texas has and will continue to get progressively more talented. And it has very little to do with Sark... it's because they have more money than God. And a lot more than Bama, FWIW. Money in a football program is like Gravity in physics. Pretty inescapable facts are involved in the equations. And OU is also exponentially more talented than us. They'll still compete with and beat elite teams here and there. They pay their players. They bought Rouse right out from under us, if I remember correctly...
