Nebraska's third annual Boneyard Bash was tonight at Memorial Stadium. The yearly open scrimmage is a chance to showcase the team to the students and promote the student section.
*** Considering it was a practice in front of a bunch of students, they showed quite a bit, including two-point conversion looks, onside kick formations, and a mix of tight and spread sets on offense.
*** Compared to last year, Boneyard Bash left a lot to be desired as far as atmosphere. Part of that might be because of the fight tonight.
*** I would estimate around 1,500 students were in attendance, although that number shrank as the event went on. Outside of the free food, background music and fireworks, this year's event was treated as much more of a public scrimmage than a celebration.
*** The scrimmage was set up a lot like the spring game to highlight the red squad. All three quarterbacks and the three running backs were on the red squad, as was the entire two-deep defense. It was helmets and shorts only; no pads for the 11-on-11.
*** Speaking of the defense, it ran solely 4-3 tonight in what was pretty much a walkthrough situational scrimmage. I'm under the impression they might stick with the 4-3 against Arkansas State as well.
*** Quarterbacks didn't rotate at all; Tanner Lee took all the snaps for the red team. It looked like the defensive line didn't rotate either, as I saw Mick Stoltenberg, Freedom Akinmoladun, and Carlos Davis in on pretty much every snap for the reds.
*** Only a few players in white were wearing their actual practice jerseys. Quarterback Andy Bunch, for example, was wearing #15, while running back Adam Taylor was wearing #30.
*** The specialists showed out in the scrimmage. Sophomore Caleb Lightbourn punted well, while senior Drew Brown looks to be in All-Big Ten, All-American form. Brown nailed a 40-yard "extra point" by a good 20 yards on the final play of the first half of the scrimmage.
*** On the second-to-last play of the first half of the scrimmage, Lee hit Tyjon Lindsey in stride on a 40-yard boundary side fly route. It was one of the few plays that drew a reaction from an otherwise mellow crowd.
*** The Iron N (student section) promoted that Mike Riley would be speaking at the event, but when the scrimmage wrapped up, all the coaches and players headed straight to the locker room. This is just another indicator that the staff is keeping things close to the vest this year.
*** The event ended with a fireworks show for the remaining students, band, and spirit squad.
