Sam's article on Tommy in OWH

@big red22

So let me get this straight... Tommy's stats on the season so far include 4 TD passes over 2 games, and one pick. Once he threw that pick you would yank him and sit him for a series or two? Wow, seems a little harsh... No margin for error.

I'm not trying to downplay the pass; it was awful. But I've never seen a coach, college, pro or otherwise, sit their qb after his first interception of the season as a consequence for a bad throw. Has anybody ever seen it?

Look I understand where you are coming from, and it was only one interception. The only problems I have is this

It may only be one interception "This Year", but how many just like that did he have last year? In my opinion there is not a better time to sit him. You are playing an inferior opponent, and it was early in the game. The play was obviously a TERRIBLE decision on his part. I think they yank him and say, "Sit down and think about this for a bit Tommy. Those are the throws that could cost us a game down the stretch in a close one. I can't have you doing that down the road, or we will may have to sit you for longer."

I am not going to sit here and say playing Fyfe for a series or two is going to make Tommy be amazing and make no mistakes. I do however think it will show him that making those mistakes will make you a bench warmer if they don't stop.

IMO that would of been the perfect time to sit him, obviously I am in the minority here.

I can appreciate where you are coming from, as his passing has contributed to some losses in the past, most notably, Iowa... I think there are times when sitting him would have been beneficial. But you are right, I think most don't think the first one thrown this year would be the right time...

I don't have a problem sitting him if he is out of control... I just felt the sample size was too small at that point in the game. Had Wyoming gotten a pick six the next series, or whenever it was that he thew another bad pass, then I might be more likely to sit him.

Comparing 15 yard personal foul penalties and interceptions are not comparable. Ask most any coach. Difference between physical and mental mistakes.

Saban doesnt play freshme QB's. His concern is they will struggle and he doesnt want their confidence destroyed early in their careers.

Urban had a rare opportunity with that may QB's with different skills. Certainly notanorm for most schools.
So Gerrys hand the ball foul, physical or mental? Darlington spin the ball foul, physical or mental? Personal fouls are controllable and only a select few are physical. The new targeting stuff is ridiculous however.

Gerry - mental
Darlington - mental
Physical mistakes do not have to result in a penalty.

Wait, interceptions aren't mental mistakes?

Not all of the time. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to the defender for making a play.

Now, the ball Tommy threw to the Wyoming defender, that's about as mental as mental gets. The ball Tommy threw to Reilly against Iowa last year instead of dumping it off to Carter for a 1st down - and possible more, again that's mental.

Yes, obviously some decisions are worse than others.

Yeah-no way should that one play cause him to be sat down. I don't think there is a single coach in this country that would do that. I don't care how bad it is or who the opponent is, one play, solely by itself should NEVER result in a player being yanked from the game. That tells him that he literally has no margin for error-that he must be perfect or else he gets yanked. I don't care whether you're a senior or how good you are, that is a ridiculously high standard to set for any player. I think what's going on here is somebody wants to punish him for what he's done in previous years. That is not fair-he should be judged on what he is doing this year. Of course sit him if the one bad play clearly is messing with him and it's causing him to make other mistakes, but that wasn't the case. We saw that in the game with Josh Allen-he clearly had lost his composure before he even threw his last couple of picks and had much more reason to be replaced-yet he still stayed in the game.

I don't like reading things like this because it leaves the impression that he thinks that the fans aren't behind him. Then again, when you read threads like one on this board from this weekend, you can understand why he may think that. I hope that isn't the case. People criticized a certain former coach(and rightfully so) for creating an us against the world mentality on the team, in which the world includes the fans. Nothing excuses him for creating that kind of culture on the team, but some people apparently never consider what we as fans sometimes do to help foster that mentality.
In fact there is still some Pelini venom tainting this team and the idea that the fans aren't behind him was promoted by Bo. No logical person can read all the praise he gets along with the occasional criticism and then come up with the blanket assumption that the "fans aren't behind me". Critiquing his play is WAY different than not being behind him. Virtually EVERYBODY wants to see him do well. I don't care what you do, you can NEVER please everybody and unfortunately TA seems to be listening to the minority of fans.
