You can't fight a riptide. It is pretty easy to float in the ocean. Don't fight it. Swim perpendicular to the shore until you get out of the riptide and swim on in. The key and it is not easy to relax, but do not panic.Drowned.

I live no where near an ocean nor do I like to visit but this is one thing my jr high science teacher taught us about and how to save yourself by swimming across the tide out of the riptide, he was an eccentric guy but glad I know about it

Swam across many a riptide just like you say until no current outbound and swam back in. Unfortunately, the one that almost killed me was as wide as the Mississippi and moving fast. By the time I got free of it I was 1/4 mile off a sparsely-populated beach. If a tourist helicopter hadn't flown over me and reported me for Orange County (CA) lifeguards to come get me a half hour later, I would have drowned. I was almost hypothermic when they got there and had no strength to swim.
Thinking more about it I seem to remember a player got caught in a rip in San Diego during one of the Holiday Bowls and lived after being out in the water quite awhile. He played in the game, but coaches were worried he would be weak. I think he was a kicker.
That was for Mitch Mustain and several other Springdale kids. Can’t remember their names but one was a tight end.
