If they will commit to doing more of what they did last night, I could be made into a believer. Still too cute for my taste with all the attempts at the quick-out/bubbles to the WRs. I died a little inside when they were 1st & Goal from the 8 and came out throwing. Got what they deserved with two red zone picks.

BUT, loved the calls that got them crucial TDs when they booted Tommy on the RPO (called run all the way IMO) to the right, and really loved the call on that QB sweep to the left that he scored on. Working the FB game, power with Cross. There was even a lead option in there.

That's what makes Tommy great. You have to use his legs to set up his arm. The playaction pass to Moore down to the 1 is the perfect example. That play was set up, sold the run fake to get a 1-on-1 and you put it out there where he runs it down or it's incomplete.

Moving forward we really need to be a power running team with play action, boot etc. Cross is a beast and Ozigbo can slide right into that role next year. The zone shotgun stuff just isn't working. We don't have backs like Ameer and Rex that can make people miss and frankly I don't think this staff is good at teaching/calling the zone read game. I think we will actually look a lot like MSU moving forward, with a little more diverse running game: FB, fly sweep, bootlegs.

The pass to Moore was the perfect example of power combined with play action. They had just brought the back end of their D down to stop the power from getting chunks. The safety never even glanced when 82 went by.

Agree completely with this post. As I've said all season, if wanting NU to get serious about establishing a decent running game that keeps the defense honest and actually gives the passing game a chance to succeed consistently means I'm a geezer clinging to a bygome era of football, I'll wear that badge proudly. Hardly a coincidence that that only two games in which they've done this - Minnesota and Michigan State - ended up in the W column.
