Roster math as of Jan 1st 2025

So let’s just stop using the term scholarship going forward boys, shall we?
Starting fall 2025 there’s just 105 roster spots and pretty sure all of them will be fully funded, or at least very close to it.
I think we have plenty of space, but we really cannot waste a roster spot on a guy like Alvano who just sucks balls.
He has one job and cannot do it to save his life so we need to cull the herd. Going forward, I think we will have quite a few more portal entries after spring ball since the roster gets trimmed by fall camp. If you are a player on the bubble, you’d be smart to hit the portal so you don’t end up on the wrong side of the 105 the next fall.

Are we keeping two scholarship kickers for '25, Hohl & Alvano?
Man, I hope so. Two punters, two kickers, two long snappers. Every position needs competition and at least one backup in case of injury. When in comes to roster construction, whatever the NFL keeps one of on their final 53, we should keep at least two. The NFL has a roster half the size and they have unlimited free agents that they can bring in.

Alvano looked good before he tore his groin on his kicking leg. He’ll probably get the spring to try to earn a spot. He hasn’t been healthy for over a year.

Walk-on's don't matter. Just consider them gone if they didn't have D1 offers last year. Easier to account for the few that will stay. Guys like Lindenmeyer.
That's fine for discussion sake, but we don't really know much about who is performing and showing potential among those redshirts. Reminds me of a similar conversation we used to have in order to get down to 85. A couple years ago, several posters on here thought that some bench rider named Nash Hutmacher should get his scholarship pulled. That struck me as odd and proved to be just a horse shit take from some football know nothings.

I wasn't trying to run down walk-ons. More just saying it's easier to eliminate the 70 walk-ons. Then start fresh with the likely scholarship worthy ones.

Yeah there was a lot of hate against Nash early on. A lot of people here don't know ball.

Will college football have practice squads in the future? I could see it, I guess… something that if we burn through our kickers we can quickly promote someone to the 105…

We've been through this before ... anyone who practices has to be included in the 105. That is plenty of players to run practice and field a team on Saturdays, regardless of injuries.

Oh, well, if he can get healthy and earn a spot ok, but if not we have to scour for a backup kicker among FCS, G5, wherever. I do t know what the rules will be on being able to bring a dude in after your 105 is set. Pretty much impossible since they have to be a student at the school. HS guys who can both punt and kick short FGs will soon be in high demand as emergency guys

The NCAA allowed rosters to be messed up when they didn’t count 2020 for eligibility.

Now they have these schools with massive rosters and now want to regulate it. Now we see a ton of kids forced into the portal with a big possibility of no where to go. So ultimately the NCAA took away the chance of getting a free education from a lot of young men. Yeah, way to look out for student athletes NCAA

Like where does Gabe Ervin go? Or Bottle ?

Remind me does walk-ons count for the 105?
You can have 105 total on the team no more. Now you can give 105 scholarships if you choose.

Thanks for the condescension… I haven’t read every single thread on the board about this and I didn’t see it anywhere in this thread. Sorry to exhaust you with my question.

I was specifically asking because some are suggesting we carry only 1 kicker. That’s why I asked. Wish I was as smart as you.

I think a reasonable compromise would be to allow a 11 player practice squad with strict rules on compensation. I think the NCAA though is trying to completely remove themselves from policing payments.

The kid who wants to be on his dream school’s roster but doesn’t merit a scholarship is going to have to start somewhere else and prove it in college to transfer in. We always had 2-3 walk on kickers and punters on the roster so we’ll likely have to use a couple of more spots for them out of the 20 extra spots

We aren't at 85...you really think we are taking 20 more players still?
I'm confused by your question or maybe just confused! Last I heard we still had around 140 football players in the program. Whoever is still here in the fall is on the 105. By the spring, they could have 130 players in the program yet. They would need to lose 25. I think they take another five guys this month or this summer. Not many.

Can (developmental) players collect NIL but not be listed on the roster? Training spring and fall but not during the season and use NIL to cover tuition.

I'm saying we are right around 105 currently (which is the max) based off projections of what I listed. Walk-ons no longer exist

Only related to this thread but was looking at who was transferring out for us. Saw 247 has Jacob Hood listed at 502 LBS. Holy shit. Not sure if that is a typo or not.

I am not sure it works that way. If I were a person donating my money to the collective, I sure as hell would stop donating if the money was spent on players not on the roster. If I want to do that, I will contribute to the general scholarship fund.
Did you fully think this one through? How I envisioned it: All coaches or administration would need to do is put a call in to a deep pocket booster and say if you chip in this $5,000 or $10,000 or whatever so we can cut this guy then we'll get this stud.

This is what I was looking for. Thanks, much more helpful than @Cedric.
My gosh, sorry to hurt your feelings.
Football clubs are not and cannot be associated with the athletic department. They are intramurals, no different than the rugby club or wine and cheese club. No football player with Division I playing ability is going to come to an institution to be "stashed" on a club team in the event of an injury to a "varsity" player. Just not realistic.
Is it possible that someday, somewhere, a club player might prove to be good enough to play for the intercollegiate team? Sure, and we kinda saw that when Frost plucked a soccer player off the club team to kick field goals against Maryland (I think it was Maryland). But football clubs will never be some kind of feeder program, if that's what you were asking.

Great points. It's highly unlikely, but I wouldn't put it past a program somewhere to stash players on a "club" team for call-up if needed for a practice squad or scout team, especially players like long snappers and placekickers/punters if coaches are loathe to use up 8-10 roster spots for special-teams-only types of players.

Couldn’t do it. Now there would be nothing to keep them from “signing” a kid in the off season who had played club football the year before but they would have had to have open scholarships to bring a kid in during the season. Are you going to leave a scholarship vacant to allow for that?

Didn’t hurt my feelings, just didn’t need to be a jerk about it either. First question I’ve asked about the 105 and I got the roll eyes from you. Sorry to waste your time.

No. Don't know why you would want to waste precious NIL dollars doing this anyway.
Good players that you know won't be able to play the whole season to injuries. Fill the spot with a scolly player and pay their tuition with NIL so they can play the following year your telling me, if Suh was injured his sophomore year and had to be cut you'd have rather him transfer than pay is tuition with NIL?

Why would any talented player have to be cut. We have 105 spots for heaven’s sake. That’s almost 5 units. We can carry 14+ defensive linemen if we want.

Ok - Here is my understanding of how the rules will be implemented. Rosters will be limited to 105 players. Teams will have to have to fund at least 90% of the 105 allowable scholarships allowed by the 2027 football season. So technically, 10% of a roster can still be walk ons, if a team did not want to fully fund the 105.
