On Parella: “I asked him how he would manage the recruiting part of the job. He gave me a great picture of how he would talk to recruits, how he would relate to them. There was a lot of substance in his answers. I think he’s going to be a great recruiter.

“I’ll tell you what: I was actually going to hire someone else. I was ready to go. But after I talked with John, that guy came in second.”

Was that someone else the guy who decided to stay at UCLA?

No. Pretty sure it was Ed O.

IMO it doesn't matter who it was. Sounds like John blew them away in the interview. Just like recruiting. It's all about closing, and it sounds like John did just that. He closed.

Really interesting that information is being shared publicly. I often assume that things like this are kind of already done deals when the ax falls.

I still have my doubts about Parrelas national reach and closing on top DL recruits nationally. I hope he surprised me and doesn't just rely or accept on us getting best players in the 500 mile radius which I think he could do. But much like my doubts about Frost as HC here I worry about JP getting great inner city large urban area type of recruits which lets face it is absolutely needed if we want to go farther than west division champs every other year

And he got a cup of coffee for his efforts........

If I'm an "inner city large urban area" kid (ftr I am not), I would pay attention to the guy who walked onto a team, then made all-league, then spent over a decade in the pros. And if a recruit is not capable of that, he'll probably be happy elsewhere.
What is it about JP that you think is deficient in terms of recruiting minority, big city kids. That he's white? From Grand Island? Both?

I hear JP's teammate from the Raiders is looking for work these days...UUUUUU know it!

Where do people think Hughes, Banker, McBride, etc came from? Assistant coaches start from worse places than being a former walk on to play in the NFL all the time.

The proof will be in the results, but there is no reason to speculate what JP will or will not be able to do in living rooms until he's on the firing squad.

I can say he's more comfortable in his skin then our former head coach. And he's not painful to listen to. That alone will make him a better recruiter.

500 mile radius, San Diego and Bay areas would be good starts for him.

Oh, Collins and VV were 500 mile radius guys.

What is an "inner city large urban area type"? maybe you could provide some examples.

Is it acceptable to yell "fire Parrella" the first time someone runs for a 1st down on us? It will be so much fun to offset the offensive coordinator that sits behind us.

Parella will bring an image to Nebraska football. How could those high schoolers not be impressed with an individual as imposing as Parella and knowing that he worked his way up and spent a long time in the pros. I love how he was prepared for the meeting with Riley and apparently had all the right answers that Riley was looking for. He will prepare the same way to meet those recruits and believe he will know all about them prior to meeting with them and will be able to discuss schemes, weigh training, etc. I think we got a winner.

Not quite as imposing as he once was....remember he started as a TE and an undersized technician. Regardless, he should resonate with kids.

Well said.

From everything I hear, sounds like Parella will be great at forming relationships and closing. Good combo for the recruiting trail.

Not a knock on John at all, but he was a scholarship signee at Colorado.

He walked onto NU after he was turned away. I assume that TO either didn't have a scholarship to give, or we didn't feel he cut the mustard out of high school with our eval or whatever, but I don't know that he necessarily has the standard walk-on story of turning down SDSU to come here and hopefully get on the field.

He was good enough to be at another Power 5 school, until they basically knee capped him during a coaching change.

Didn't have anything to do with a coaching change at CU-Bill McCartney had been there for 6 years already. According to a World-Herald article from 1988, it had to do with sufficient academic progress in his senior year.

Ah ok thanks. The paper the other day made it sound like he was a victim of a coaching change (I would have been 6 at the time). They pointed out that what happened to John would not happen today (I assume since he had signed, not simply had an offer yanked).

But I can see why the Nebraska papers wouldn't necessarily want to point out that John was an academic casualty.
