Rhule at Outland Trophy dinner

In addition to Raiola, Rhule, Foley (over a decade) and Satterfield have experience coaching the OL. Having a HC and OC with this type of experience is a huge plus. Offensive linemen will want to come play for this program.

Rumor among the analyst circles is that RecruitingAnalyst_National received a score card like this from Matt Rhule it was all 0s. I don't think his mind ever quite recovered.

Trev Alberts somewhere in the background.

It will always take me longer to trust a smooth talker. However, it is a great skill to have in sales and other areas of your life, so there is no fault in being a good speaker. It will just take me longer to trust one because actual results may vary.

Most of us aren’t intimidated by people who can speak intelligently….unless they’re obviously full of ###%.

Rhule strikes me as an intelligent guy. He’s not a gift for gab kind of guy, he’s a very effective public speaker. And he knows how to read a room. Stanford OT with a gaudy GPA has NU on the list for transfer. Rhule doesn’t BS him, but instead gives him a mock draft analysis.
I think kids are going to want to play for this guy.

What is your point? He communicates well and some reason you don't trust good talkers. Weird. Maybe he needs a wad of chew in his mouth and talk like a high schooler for your approval. Weird
Do you believe every salesman that you hear?

We don't know how Matt is going to do here, but I find it interesting that all the knob slobbers just get busy doing what they do, all over a guys' public speaking abilities.

It's like some of you just want to set yourselves up, all over again, sucking down whatever narrative is fed to you, all while professing your undying allegiance and devotion for your new Messiah.

Heck, it might even end up all being true, but watching the speed to which you all drop to your knees is embarrassing to say the least.

More than his speaking abilities. He’s proven that he can turn around programs.

He’s brought in a recruiting class (including portal transfers) that most have been pleasantly surprised by.

His Twitter game is on point. (Ok, joking with this one)

And on top of all that, he’s a good talker.

It’s about way more than his words.

Trev sold him on his vision. What you are seeing is someone who shares that vision and is selling it. To recruits. To boosters. To fans. You can see how he recruited in such short time. You can see how he worked the portal. This guy gets it. The only thing left is to show that he can coach. Feel enthusiastic? I know I do.

Well to me, it's funny because I was very delicate in any criticism, and look at immediately what happens.. dingle attacks, wasker attacks, and here you are too.

I'm not desparaging your gd hero.. just saying people should tap the breaks a little.. but of course that isn't allowed by the glass heart police on this board that you're also a part of.

If you want to talk about his recruiting, sure he's done okay so far. I'm not criticizing his recruiting, other than I think he should have gotten another legit QB in here prior to spring ball.

My main issues is the all the sweet talk and then the circle jerk that follows by a certain subset of fans.

I’m sorry you felt like I was attacking. You pointed out a bunch of knob swallowers (seems as if you attacked first, tbh) and I just responded that it was more than just his words. You claim this is “all over his public speaking abilities”. I merely showed that it’s much more than that.

Reread my post and let me know how I attacked you. All I did was express that it’s much more than your oversimplification. But I didn’t name call, question your intelligence, or anything else…

that remark was made after I was attacked.. so I gave the board a piece of my mind. You're just here defending them.

edit: you know what, doesn't matter.. just put all you on ignore.. don't need to interact with people such as yourselves.

That’s fine, put me on ignore. We often don’t see eye to eye.

For the record, I’m not defending them. You chose to focus on a singular aspect of Rhule, and that’s his ability to speak. I posted that it was much more than that. How is that defending them?

You know what I think? You don’t do well when people don’t agree with you. Which is what you are accusing others of doing.

If you see this, go ahead and fire away. I know, I’m a jackass. I’ve heard it before from you.

Being a 'good talker' isn't just some trait that allows him to spew bs. It's also an extreme advantage in any pursuit. I've always thought great salesman aren't just salesman by trade but make great ceo's, leaders.
I am a cynic by nature but this guy has done a great job on many fronts so far. Do I have concerns? Heck yeah. His assistants aren't particularly impressive. His college winning pct is short of every coach we've had post T.O. with the exception of Frost. And I can't just pass up his pro record by salving myself with excuses. I am a realist. When I think of talkers...

Solich-Gave an obligatory effort but was awkward. Still known for 'they ran around well' which was just an example of the kinds of podium talk he seemed accustomed to. Guarded coach speak extraordinare. If he was asked what he had for breakfast he'd answer "breakfast food".

Callahan- good until he's stressed. Then it was snarky and bitter. Reminds me of the basketball coach from 'One On One' who turned on Robby Benson. (Underated sports movie from the 70's)

Pelini- Angry tough guy routine, always. Works in limited situations. Gave the vibe he was liable to lose his $#!+ and start a series of roundhouse kicks.

Riley- Nice guy but not aggressive or not the right kind of inspiring. After listening to him I didn't want to run through a brick wall but did want to call an elderly relative to say loved them.

Frost-perpetual indigestion. His tendency to brag was less inspiring and more disturbing and lacked being authentic. Our effort is so extreme we are throwing up in spades. I saw his OL, I think they just ate too much candy. His claim of making the B10 change to keep up with him was one of the biggest egg on the faces of all time.

Rhule hasn't won a game here but he is several levels above these guys in presentation which is a big deal. It means little though if he has some serious lacking in other areas. Can he win?
If not, the junior Tony Robbins thing will not seem so impressive.

we as a group, need to give rhule his space, and let him do his job...he can speak well in public, this is a good thing...

what we need to do is rail harshly on big and big 12 foe trolls, who try to cause division and dicrepancies about any part of our new alinement.

Thoughtful post, but my main takeaway was I suspect you had a crush on Annette O'Toole, which is why you watched One on One multiple times.

I don't think being a good public speaker is as important to be a successful coach as it is for other professions. But I do know what put me at the top of my game in my professional career (engineering) was the years I spent learning how to public speak really well. Once I got good at it it opened a lot of doors for me. What I will be looking for during spring ball, camp and especially the season is what Rhule says, not the delivery. I hope he goes in depth about what went well and not so well rather than coachspeak.

I like the way his staff is spoon feeding little doses here and there. There was Rhule's introduction speech, then the sitdown with some of the coaches and support staff, then the signing day PC, then a short address at the Outland event, then the two coaches yesterday and all the tweets along the way. He is keeping the interest in the program going.
