Recruiting

No disrespect to Kentucky football but damn with those classes you would expect more. Can you imagine if we had those class rankings combined with those win loss percentage ?

They go through the SEC gauntlet though... if they were in the B1G they would go undefeated every year! :D

Can't say I have even checked out Kentucky's recruiting or anything football related for them, but maybe they just recruit for stars and don't get guys that fit in the system they are trying to do there.

One thing for sure is all high stars are not created equal. Part of it is system, part of it is personality. Maybe 40% of top stars ever contribute too their teams. Coach T O said at one point, we wouldn't take a large per cent of the top 50 rated recruits if they were asking. Its getting tougher out there, with revenue sharing for facilities and dollars keeping more coaching talent around - its more competitive.GBR

You could have an awesome TE playing small school ball in the Midwest that goes totally unnoticed since his coach has a running offense, whereas, he is tall and very athletic and could easily get 5 stars if he was in Miami HS with a passing offense.

Also, I think what TO did was also look at the kids character, i.e., will he be motivated and determined, will he work hard to lift weights and go through the physical training to get stronger, bigger, faster, smarter. THis is the big alpha factor that Rivals and others don't rate, that determines whether a kid with some talent will do anything.

How does a team like Kentucky keep getting top 20 classes but yet suck.
Since 2010 kentucky has had 1 top 20 class. Their class average from 2010 to 2016 is 42

Now here is a list of who does less with more

UCLA 3 in top 10 and 6 in top 16 since 2010
Georgia 3 in top 10 and 6 in top 12
Tenn 2 in top 5 and 6 in top 17
Texas 3 in top 3 and 5 in top 12
Florida 3 in top 4 and 6 in top 14

UCLA is one that always comes to mind. They always seem loaded with talent, but don't seem to do too much with all the 4 and 5 stars they seem to land and quite a few guys making it to the league.

Yeah UCLA is the first to come to mind. They get 5 stars every year and are below average every year. As for Georgia and UF, it's all Bama. Hard to do anything, no matter how much talent you have, when there's a D-League NFL team in your conference.

I can guarantee you that even in the most remote areas, if a kid is good, not even great, the word will get out. HS film is shared all of the time by even Smallville high schools. Coaches get the information out all over. If you can give an example of a hidden five star ability kid I would like to know it. I was at a small school in western Kansas and college coaches all over knew about every kid that might have a chance to play.

Some on here remember a guy Gil Brandt I think his name was. In the TO days he was quoted as saying that Nebraska kids in some cases do not have as much upside because of the quality college coaching they were receiving. Kids grow and mature, coaches account for that. Heck, even high school.coaches start watching junior high kids and planning years into the future what their team and that kid will look like.

Kentucky gets many of its 4*s out of Ohio. If you look at their profiles you will notice a lack of offers from tOSU, ND, Michigan and even MSU in many instances. You will see a lot of offers from schools like Indiana, Illinois and the MAC. The kids UK gets (from OH) tend to fall into two categories:

1) Off field risks that either don't make it to campus or don't last long once there

2) Borderline 4*s that are either outside the top 250 or at the very end of it (5.8 RR). They might be decent players but not all 4*s are created equal (winning programs are getting there fair of 5.9 and 6.0 RR 4*s). And by the fact the bigger name "local" programs aren't offering it might mean some of them should be on the 3* side of that border.

The above is not a recipe for winning.

Wisconsin has been picking up where TO left the last 10 years, especially on the lines.

Mora continues to sell them on what a great coach he is and they are stupid enough to believe him.

When you have highly recruited classes you set the bar higher for success. If you don't succeed, then coaching changes occur.
