Recruiting for 2023

It means better than the guys Frost recruited and maybe as good as the guys who transferred. Palmer. Drew. etc. Better than what we had available this year. There are guys who are pretty damned good players who just want to play. Does the name Joe Burrow ring a bell. I heard he wanted to come to NU.Winking
Have you looked at the data for the portal? For every Joe Burrow, the exception of all time, there are dozens if not hundreds who didn't pan out.

It seems like guys are going here and there looking for that playing time magic that rarely happens.

Seems like we have highly recruited DB from tOSU that has hardly seen the field and what about Marquese Step, how did that work out? So for every Burrow, there are lots of busts.

I do agree with your premise that you can fill in some weak areas on a team where you had some recruiting busts. The better teams would obviously have fewer of those holes to fill which says more about our recruiting and player development than.anything else.

There's really no reason we shouldn't have a decent DL. Mathis, Nelson, tanner, Drew, Nash, Feist, Wynn.

Plenty of talent, plenty of guys that have been solid players either here or elsewhere.

Coaching and Scheme are the issues.
Actually the D line wasn’t bad on Saturday. I’m not going to name names but we had some young backers blow assignments that led to TDs.

Burrow was the extreme but almost all of the guys we took in the portal have been better than what we already had on our roster. Hill has changed positions but is our starting kick returner. One WR left after Frost was fired and he was demoted by Mickey.

How can Mathis go from a superstar to mediocre?
I wouldn’t consider him to have been a superstar at TCU. He never made first team All-Big 12. Although he had 9 sacks in 2020, he had only 4 in 2021.

Again, does that mean these players were all really good or our roster was really bad. If teams, like Nebraska, find multiple, better players in the portal coming from teams where weren't starting, lost their spot or were unhappy with PT, they are doing a lousey job or both recruiting and developing. If the shoe fits....

We could sure have used the two DTs we lost to Oregon but maybe we replaced them with more talented guys?

I do think our D line has gotten quite a bit better since Chin was let go but let’s not over estimate guys like Feisty.

I think the Casey and Riley were not great players but helped us. I think Wynn and Drew are at least as talented. Again, watching our D line the last month I think they held up pretty well against some stout O lines. Our biggest problem is at linebacker. We kind of have some tweeners playing linebacker who aren’t big enough IMO. As Charlie said a couple of days ago we need to get bigger and faster there. Hausman is a start but we need some dudes there IF you want to compete next year we probably as Mickey said find some guys from JUCO. All that said, I think we had enough talent to be MUCH better on D than we were those first several games.

Chins liked the smaller LBs on the inside. They were in a lot of coverages, always chasing someone across the field. Under Chins, our LBs didn't run to the ball and find the lane to the RB, that led to lots of easy 4-5 yard gains. One if the most frustrating Ds I have ever watched.

Listening to several former Blackshirts they were befuddled at the D Chin called. They said that some of the experienced talent we had last season covered up a lot of Chin’s illogical defensive scheme. I’m not an Xs and Os guys but some of the ridiculous scheme was obvious to me in games like OU.

I hope we switch back to a 4-3 defense...

While our base is supposedly a 3-4 we’re lined up like a 4-3 often. I’m not hung up on what a DC calls his defense because within either a DC can vary his attack. Attack. Thats an important word that Chin overlooked. I don’t care what you run just know your responsibility, get lined up and play with your hair on fire
