Recruiting class still in the 40's

I would like to lay this at the feet of how it takes multiple years to recruit certain kids, but other schools don't seem to have that problem. I believe the class will finish higher than it is, but IMO this is not high enough. To get to where NU says it intends to go, it needs Top-15 classes. Period.

Agreed. Many new coaches are able to leverage highly-rated recruiting classes right off the bat. It's the whole "splash hire" response.

Well once we land this 4* receiver we move up, and it sounds like there are more than a few others possibly coming this way. No clue on the state of recruiting right now, but I'll go with @HuskerTimOmaha and say that we finish a lot higher than we are right now. Next years class and the year after could be monster classes.

Simply based on the number of commits we have thus far. Now if you are concerned that we only have 14 commits then that's another story. We will move up the ladder as more commits start to roll in.
It's not just that.

The Rivals ranking gives a point total for number of commits and their grade. BUT, does anyone honestly believe that NU ends up looking like some other teams in the top 20? For example:

Penn St. (15): 11 commits from 4*
South Carolina (19): 11 commits from 4*
UCLA (13): 3 commits from 5*, 9 Commits from 4*
Oklahoma (14): 14 commits from 4*

NU is listed with 5 commits from 4*. We really expecting another 6 kids to commit who are 4* or better? We expecting even ONE 5* kid? FSU has 5. Four other teams have 4 of them.

I think Riley's staff is doing better than the previous staff, and maybe they really rise by signing day. But as of right now, they are not getting it done on a level that turns them into a Top-10 team.

If that was true Texas would have a billion National Championships.
Fallacy of the false choice. You're wrong.

You need great coaching AND great talent. Some talented teams suck. Some teams full of nobodies win games they shouldn't.

The ELITE teams, that win titles, have ELITE classes. Period. Find me the team that didn't. I've got all day.

Huh? I was responding to an OP that said we are behind Rutgers, Minnesota, NW, and Maryland. No..I don't expect NU to leap any of the above schools you mentioned.

the class that won 2 NC's for NU. (well as much as you can say 1 class wins a NC)
was ranked 26th, by the experts.
I wish we could get that kinda 26th ranked class every year.

People need to get used to the idea that we are no longer recruiting lots of kids with no other (or few) P5 offers. Better quality recruits don't get on board until later in the year. This recruiting class is going to end up being very solid.

Coaches have said we want to take 22 in this class. We are currently at 14. If we can get those other 8 guys... We will be in the Top 25 in my opinion. I also think we are sitting in a pretty good spot for some highly regarded 2017-18 kids.

Not worth wasting the time with those who don't get it.

That the 91 class? Where did you find it that info?

Looking at this article: http://bigrednetwork.com/story/a_brief_history_of_husker_recruiting_1990-99

They had Top-10 classes in 92, 93, 95, 96. They played for the title (some would say won and were robbed) in 93, then won in 94, 95, 97.

So yes, you can have some GOOD years to set up great years and still get there. But you gotta have those great years.

So much for that splash hire recruiting class.

People have consistently been saying that 2017 would align as the splash year. The staff had to come in an sign about 1/3 of the 2015 class in a month, start on 2016 (which is shaping up), and we are in a great spot early for 2017.

This staff is working harder and more effeciently by far than the previous regime. It will pay off.

As far as the early 90's,,, what a different world. OU, Mizzou, IA were all down then. Do you think the Minter's, Wistroms and Alberts of the day would have all flocked to NU in the current climate? Maybe, but would have been much more difficult.

We will finish in the top 25. And I love our committ list so far. The all time California reception record holder, the Minnesota player of the year, Colorado player of the year. Missouri player of the year. Patrick O'brien. Best OL in Iowa, etc. Loving this class.

Top 25 with 20 being a real possibility.
That would be quite a run to the finish to hit 20.

I like that a lot of their 3* guys are very high 3*. Like that they're being patient enough not to just take commits from lower-tier targets just because it's a tough pull with their top guys. Staying on kids, sounds like they flipped a 4* ath who has been a UL commit for quite a while. When they get their chance to get out and hit the road, they seem to do well.

You wonder what the difference is, why some mediocre schools can pull elite guys without a ton of nearby talent, and why others struggle so much. You hate to say it's all dirty money and payoffs.

Jeremy Crabtree (ESPN) said in an interview last week on 1620 that he believes Nebraska will end up with a Top 15 class. Here are our ranks for all the recruiting sites I could find:
Rivals: 43
Scout 34
247: 30
ESPN: 26

That's a composite 30 and we plan to take at least 10 more, plus we are in on some big dogs (Smith, Faronik, Fitzpatrick, Juarez, Simmons, etc). I think this will end up being a very good class.

This is more important than our W-L record this year. No chance was this a championship-caliber team. We need a strong influx of talent and depth.

Makes the look back at the season interesting. I think if they had played more boring, grind-it-out games in a lot of those, they win. For sure that Illinois game is a W if you make a couple smarter play calls.

But maybe you have to show high-end QBs and WRs that "Hey, we're gonna let you come here and put up numbers."

My opinion of pass vs run is what it is, but that's who Riley and Langs are. They're gonna throw, that's who they are. So get out there and get the best throwers and receivers you can get, and show me what your ceiling is. Let's find out sooner rather than later.

that's what was repeated in the media during the 94 and 95 years. maybe that was the lowest ranking they got from a particular recruiting service, and they played up the doing more with less angle.

I don't know...

they also played up that McBride went to recruit straight speed in the early 90's because we got waxed by ucla (aikmen) and some florida team at that time.

We're behind Maryland, Northwestern, Minnesota, and Rutgers.

I know it's still early...
Nebraska never finished behind those teams when Riley's predecessor was at Nebraska. It's still early, but I don't know why people think Riley is some sort of dynamite recruiter.

Tre Bryant - 4-Star everywhere but Rivals. - Going to be Missouri 6A POY. but a 5.5 on Rivals?
Spielman - Minnesota POY - Multiple Big Ten offers, 5.7 on Rivals is accurate due to size.
JoJo Domann- Colorado POY - 5.6 on Rivals - IMO, the best HS football player Nebraska has recruited since Rex Burkhead.
Derion Grim - Now the All Time leading Single Season Receiver in CA HS History. -5.6 on Rivals.
- Patrick O'Brien - Orange County, CA POY
- Quayshon Alexander - 4-Star everywhere but Rivals - ESPN top 300
Ben Stille - listed at 6'4 231 on his Rivals profile. Dude is 6'5 252 and a better athlete than Noah Fant.
- John Raridon and Brokop are the top offensive linemen in Iowa and Illinois.

If you want to criticize the lack of numbers and defensive linemen, I think it could be somewhat warranted.

But this is well on its way to being a great class. I don't subscribe to the whole "Rivals Bias" argument. I just think they suck at their job. Derion Grim , Tre, and Jo Jo Doman are the biggest injustices on this list.

I don't know about you guys, but I always check the avg star rating (currently 3.21). It seems that the actual number of recruits influences how you rank, but if you look at the avg star rating, ours is pretty good. Yes it could be higher, but the point is many of those teams ahead of us in the rankings have less than a 3 star ranking.. 2.65, 2.7, 2.8 etc..

I do too, it's a balanced mix for me though with a tad bit more weight on the average star. Gotta fill classes though, as close to max as possible.

Well, I guess Iowa is showing that you don't need top recruiting classes.

Though, I believe I read somewhere that every team that has played for the National Championship has averaged at least 3.5 stars in their last 4 recruiting classes before that championship season. We're at 3.2 right now.

Many people tried to justify Pelini's recruiting by pointing at average star rating, but we're seeing now that his smaller recruiting classes really hurt our depth. The best teams typically have both high numbers and high average stars.

We won't finish behind them this year either. People like Crabtree don't forecast a top 15 finish for Nebraska without some form insider knowledge. While I think a 15-20 rank is much more likely if Crabtree says top 15 it leads me to believe we have a real shot at some guys yet. 2-3 more 4 stars and suddenly this class starts to look pretty solid. Like wise keep in mind that Rivals has Nebraska rated the lowest of all the services by a wide margin. There are some services that already think we have pretty solid class.
Look at our commits and tell me Rivals has POB, Grim, Bryant, and Alexander rated correctly. JD Spielman is Minnesota's top player and only received a 5.7 rating for pete's sake. Our class is already better than many in this thread are giving it credit for and its only going to get better!

One of the other sites has a class calculator. Drop these guys in, Smith, Faronik, Fitzpatrick, Juarez, Simmons, Reece, and you're definitely top 25. Mix and match these with a few others that have offers and it's easy to see a top 25 class rating.
