If we end up ranked 6th in the West at quarterback, it will be a long season. I doubt that happens though.
Agree. Considering
Wisc- Iowa-NW-Purdue and us all went to the portal to get their projected starter if we aren’t near the top of that list at season end then our coaches got out badly out-coached at the most important position on the field

Sure, but Nebraska grabbed one of the worst available QBs in the portal.

I firmly believe we finish ranked ahead of MN. Their schedule is brutal. Their lines will not be what they’ve been, and Fleck will not be able to just run the ball to control the game this season.

Illinois is favored by 10 points over Toledo, that will be a tough game but what would our line be? Neb +3.5? They are going to have trouble scoring.

Wisconsin I have close to no idea on, they could be great or pedestrian and I wouldn’t be surprised either way.

Only thing I’m confident on is Iowa will be very good, but we do get them at home which is huge.

I think Minnesota beats Nebraska in week one. That one game will mean the difference between 4th and 5th place in the division.

If I had any faith in Jeff Sims, I would give Nebraska a much better shot because I think their offensive line will be better and they have a lot of talent at skill positions. But Sims has just been pedestrian most of his career.

Sims will be good enough. I feel we now have a staff that will not put everything on the QB shoulders. And stress having a running game to compliment the passing attack. If they can reign in just a little of his accuracy issues. He has a high ceiling. Excited to see what kind of QB development this staff con produce. We haven't seen that for years.

That makes sense if that’s what you believe. Sims has not been great, but there is not really much evidence to believe Kaliakmanis will automatically be better than Sims this year either. I think Sims will put it all together for the most part. He has all the tools. Has not played with great surrounding talent either.

There was another ho-hum ACC QB about 10 years ago that had done very little in his career before transferring to a rival bigten school and elevated his game after being surrounded by a more talented team. Not expecting that kind of jump from Sims, but it’s not impossible for him to be a completely different player with a different staff, team, and conference.

As with every forecast / prediction but it’s the off-season and we can only talk about the ills of B1G morality for so long.
But as soon as we stop talking about 1, another is sure to follow on the heels of the previous.

So exactly who are the voters in this ranking?

Minnesota does have an absolute beast of a TE.
Illinois is solid but didnt they lose their DC? Theyll still be in the hunt.

West is a crapshoot, yet again.

I think that DC is actually overrated. And he will get exposed at Purdue. 3 years from now I think we will look back on that 2022 Illinois team and see a defense with 9 or 10 starters playing in the NFL.

And despite their draft picks from last season, they still return more NFL talent. Illinois absolutely has the most talented defensive line in the Big Ten, not just the West. They also have a Sophomore LB named Gabe Jacas who is a future 1st Team All American.

Dumb question, but who do you consider OLB's at Purdue? If it is Caraway and Sydnor, they are vastly underrated. I'd have Purdue DT's higher as well. They have a couple really good ones to clog the middle.

I thought TE was low, but the west is loaded with TE's. I agree with C until Hartwig is back, then it's to low. No idea what corner looks like, so probably best to have them last for now. Haha

And who developed those NFL players? I see no indications suggesting Walters can't coach or recruit. I've been wrong before, but I think he will be a pretty good head coach when all is said and done.

That is a ridiculous statement, Casey Thompson transferred due to Sims, at the very worst being as good as him. If CT had stayed, where would you have ranked him?
CT was flawed but was accurate. Accuracy holds a lot of weight for me in a qb. Never seen Sims play other then the spring game but seems there are possible accuracy issues with him? That concerns me if true. I might have a heart attack if I see NU qb's still missing open receivers for a first down like Amart constantly did.

Our TE group is nothing but potential at this point and I haven't seen anything showing Gilbert's waiver has been approved. Penciling in potential has led to the Huskers constantly underperforming expectations for years.

What does “on paper” mean? High school rankings? If not, I must be missing something.

For Iowa: Luke Lachey returns with 36 receptions for 531 yards and 4 TD’s in two years.

They add Erick All who had 38 receptions for 437 yards and 2 TD’s his last healthy season with McNamara.

Kirk did a tremendous job filling holes through the portal. “Best player(s)” is incorrect. Singular would be correct. The good thing is that they got Nick Jackson from Virginia to lessen the impact of losing Campbell. He is much smaller than Jack so it will be interesting to see how he does against run first Big Ten teams.

It's a combination. One extremely athletic, highly ranked prospect (Fidone) who has an injury history. One who has NFL measureables who was a Freshman All-American at LSU then transferred to Georgia (Gilbert). And a young walk-on who was thrust into action earlier then he should have been and played pretty good (Boerkircher).

Cornicator, Love this post and thanks for compiling the list. Can you take a stab at Special Teams (punters and kickers). Hopefully there won’t be any onside kicks while ahead by 11 points this year.

Improvement on offense with better players
Coaching will make up for players on defense
Easy schedule

Cornicator has almost always been overly optimistic in the past so it’s an interesting take from him.

Where does our QB room rate if Sims goes down and we have to rely on HH?

Gilbert isn't going to get a waiver, meaning he won't be available in 2023. And Fidone hasn't played a down of football. If anything, I'm being overly generous with that 3rd place slotting.

I'm not very high on Sims either...and if he goes down, OMG are we in some trouble. I'm excited about this season but part of me wishes we could fast forward to next season to. That QB room is shakey at best and i'll be holding my breath when we take a snap, all season.

I think you have to make the same case for everyone - how would he rate against other B1G backups. My guess is right in the middle as I don’t think the B1G West is very deep at backup QB’s.
