Can I get some pros/cons for buying about 50 head of calves next spring (weight would be about 450# give or take} and putting them on my dad's pasture for about 3 months with corn supplementation (he suggested 5 pounds per head a day). Selling them at about 900#'s.
I have a separate full time job making good money, but work 4 on 4 off, so looking for a somewhat passive income/hobby on my days off. (I just recently bought 2 rentals but cant buy anymore for a year or two). From what my dad told me on prices, if the price stayed relatively close from the time I bought them to selling them, after paying for the corn and pasture, I would be making about $400-450/hd. That's an easy $20k for 3 months work, seems way to good to be true to me! And if it was that easy, why doesn't everyone do it? I know there are risks of the price dropping out and calves dying, but having them only 3 months it seems the risk is low.
So I am thinking I am missing something, enlighten me! TIA
