I agree with this also. I've seen a lot of good stuff this year, and they haven't had enough time to turn the roster over and completely implement their system. It will be interesting to see what that looks like next year. This is only his 2nd year here, it's too early to say he isn't going to get Nebraska over the hump.
Yeah...Riley just stood there like "WTF"Agree with all the above but Saturday night sure looked like Bo days, minus the pacing, slashing, and spitting.
This is premature crap
I agree with this and even think if MR can average 8-9 wins a year I think he's accomplished his goal at NU. If the author of this defines "over the hump" as being a perennial top 10 team he could be right. But restoring sportsmanship, stability, and respect while bringing in some good talent and exciting football should be viewed as successful.I love MR and hope he can get us to conference championship and playoff appearances. But if he can simply stabilize the program, win 10ish games a year and load the cupboard for the next guy, I will be happy. Callahan type recruiting and Pelini type W/L record (as those were not the problems with either), with some professionalism and good PR over the next 5 or so years would put us in a good place.
I agree with your post although the 2 DTs that left are both playing in the NFL for teams that will be competing for titles. I'd say they made the right decision.I disagree with him not heing able to get the Huskers over the hump. he was left bare with Offensive Lineman and his 2 top DTs left for what they thought were greener pastures. if he can get 9 or 10 wins a season for 3 years theat will give him the time needed to get the O/D lines in order.
Which hump or hangover Callahan, Pelini, the leaving of TO and everyone else installing our SC program to be more physical? Our first hump is getting competitive in all games and We not only need great recruits but depth and having teams that come to NU to play worry. Like so many other below the top ten programs we have a big drop off when someone is hurt at almost every position, Fix that then get the 10 + win seasons. great playmaker national talent in each recruiting class then see if this coaching staff coaches up their talent and has good game planning, play calling and clock management and use of the talent we have.
Nailed itFar too early to make these sort of projections. Typical overreaction to a single game. Through 21 games this is the first where Riley's Nebraska teams has been taken behind the woodshed on both sides of the ball. When a really good team plays well and a pretty good team plays poorly, this sort of thing can happen. Match ups are still the key to every game. Nebraska does not yet match up well with Ohio St.
I am just starting to realize this staff didn't sell-out to win now. I really think their plan was to try their best right now but to build for 2018-ish. Riley wants one big shot before he retires and he is trying to set-up his ducks in rows right now.
Proof is, what does this team need the most of? OL & DE's. We knew that was an issue last year but yet the staff continued to only push hard on recruiting HS kids. There were 19 OL & 16 DE in last years JUCO top 100 and we landed zero of them. Hell, has this staff even landed 1 Juco player yet? That's a pretty standard thing to do when the prior staff leaves positions thin.
And a lot of those Juco's are in the 500 mile radius. And a lot of those are starting in college football right now or at least in the 2 deep. We get to see one this weekend starting @ LT for Minnesota. So when people say, Bo left this team with nothing and Cav's having to play walk-on zero-star blab-blah-blah wadda-wadda-wadda. Great. Just try to remember he did very little to help the immediate future. And try to understand that our coaches aren't stupid.
The staff has been around the block. Look at the potential it has in a few years on this line. Gates & Farniok @ Tackles, then Foster, Farmer, & Raridon in the inside. Barnett & a few others as swing guys. If what you want is star power @ O-line, there you go. That's it. But it's probably going to be another year or two before this materializes into a good enough product to compete at the highest level.
So my bottom line is this, we've seen 3 major coaching changes in 12 years. BC tried to build fast. He hit the Juco's hard. He tried to put a bandage on something that required stitches. He didn't work out. Bo was an inbetweener. He worked the Juco's but didn't overload on Juco's. Obviously wasn't a great recruiter and he didn't work out. This staff is looking more long-term and using walk-ons vs Jucos to cover-up depth issues. It's a risky gamble for the program but not really for the staff. Because if it doesn't work out, MR retires anyway. But IMO it will work out. Hard work usually does. That's the Nebraska way. It's just going to take some frustration along the way and I will probably act like an A**hole from time to time between then and now but its all out of love. Looking forward to the future and praying to god that this young O-line develops and sticks around.
