Post-game presser: Riley says 3rd down was called QB run

With all due respect, it was a dumb move to throw it 31 times in that weather. And look at the tweet from Callahan on the front page-the call looks like a bootleg run/pass option. Maybe someone told TA not to pass it, maybe TA didn't hear it. But it was a dumb call. That was on the coaches.
I would rather have TA bootles and burn clock instead of risking a fumbles exchange. I agree that throwing it 31 times yesterday was a mistake but still like the last play.

I'm sorry, but what?? Tommy Armstrong is the QUARTERBACK of this team and he's starting for the 3rd year in a row. If you don't know NOT TO PASS in that situation yesterday, you should NOT be playing QB for a major D-I team at this point. At some point the coddling and protection has to cease and you need to make the RIGHT DECISIONS to help your team win the football game. The coaches can't do it for you all the time. Make the big boy decisions and BE A WINNER. That's what it boils down to.

the coaches by now should know what they have in TA

the correct call late in the game when we were trying to run the clock was a pass play with the explicit instructions to tommy to under no circumstances take a sack knowing full well that given those instructions TA would be sure to take a sack

Does anyone have video of the last play...why is the RB not blocking instead of looking for a pass.....

Stupid play call....no matter how you try to rationalize it.

This was a textbook milk the clock situation. Run the ball straight ahead...maybe a 1st down...if not milk the clock...take the penalty pooch punt maybe inside 10 with the way the punter had been playing, guess the coach forgot about that..let the clock bleed. 20 secs left. Even after the 1st completion they had. The best they get is one shot to the endzone.

Any coach worth a salt says we didn't execute and moves on period.

Now we cant expect to execute a simple hand off to the RB.

If TA doesn't make 2 plays yesterday we don't score more than 3 points against Illinois.

Why not call a QB sweep with blockers in front of TA.

Ozigbo off-tackle was good for 7+ all game.

I probably would've started there....

Like Beck before him, I think Langsdorf is calling plays based on what he perceives to be his identity....and I-Formation running does not appear to fit what he likes, and so he avoids it.

Reilly as the team CEO needs to come down on Langsdorf like a ton of bricks and get him to check his ego for the good of the team.

I think you bootleg it, let Tommy run around for a few extra seconds, then he puts a knee down or slides. We more than likely win the game.

But I gotta think on all of those long throws that generally the "Go" route is the primary receiver. Those play calls are head-scratchers in that type of wind.

I thought let him bootleg out and then run if the option was there, but over all game,
Lets not forget the receivers who dropped balls and the muffed punt by our returning star.
tore them loose from their shoes in the wrong way...

See, you're getting better, I can sense some sarcasm here.

Like I have said a couple times, I have absolutely no problem with the play call. I do have a problem with not calling a timeout to get everyone on the same page. As far as Riley saying what he said in the presser, I have no issue with that either. If Armstrong can't handle it being pointed out he made a mistake, then he shouldn't be a D1 QB. Him denying an interview request tells me he knows he screwed up. He's a captain. He needs to speak after the game, win or lose.
Unacceptable to turn down interview requests. Its not an obligation, but it shows a tremendous lack of leadership. Maybe he learned it from T-Mart.

I disagree. You said it's not an obligation, and it's not. Going out and talking about it to the media won't fix anything. It's Riley's job to provide the leadership.

TA f'd up period. It is not even a question. He is a 3 yr starter for a D1 blue blood, if he doesn't understand what to do that is mind boggling to me. I like TA but this on him period.

It is a sign of a lack of leadership and accountability. You are a captain. You speak to the media win or lose. You are held to a higher standard than the other players. You lead by example. Steve Taylor was pissed last night that Armstrong did this. He basically said he is not a true leader if he can't face the press, good or bad. Multiple former players have accused this team of having a severe lack of leadership and that they won't win without it.

I don't have an issue with him not wanting to talk to the media. He's not said or done anything previously to create any ill will and he had to be just devastated once he realized what he had done. The play blew up in his face and he tried to do do much. Not an unusual occurrence for a college QB. Hopefully he learns from it and comes out with his hair on fire this next weekend. Still love the kid. and glad we have him.
