Portal Safety is N

He will be here for a year and then move on.

Great Job Reaction GIF

2nd team after starting for 15 games is a far cry from being listed as 2nd team and barely playing.
Getting passed up on the depth chart after starting for a mid level defense is better than just not being good enough to start, but be listed as 2nd team, for a top 5 defense?

I think they are pretty comparable situations.

Would Wright have ever earned a start at Georgia?

Holgerson might attract some high flyers on offense, especially with Raiola on the roster. But the D is in flux, and the adds on that side of the ball seem to be value picks. If the portal kids from Mizzou and MS St pan out, they could be integral parts of NU defense for a few years.

15 starts at cb in a league that is known for its passing is legit experience. The other guy appears to have played in 4 games over 2 seasons. A total unknown. Again, a good looking prospect, but not someone you would plan on potentially starting. Which is the exact opposite of Wright. People were hoping/planning on him contributing or starting right away.

I also wouldn't make assumptions about USC. They always have talent. One of the 2023 corners went to Bama and is now pondering leaving for the NFL as at least a mid-round grade.

Wright = plug-in and play. Rhett = prospect

Wright has shown that he was a good get and Rhett has very good potential. To act like Rhett's minimal playing time means he isn't very good is crazy. The dude was a redshirt freshman on an insanely loaded team. The fact he did get in seems to be quite promising to me, even if it was at the end of blow out games.

Is anyone saying he isn't going to be good? He's very inexperienced. Played in 2 games in 2023 and 2 games in 2024. I'm fine with taking guys like this, I just won't have the expectation that he will be a big 2025 contributor like I had for Wright.

I get what you are saying, my point is that if Wright was at Georgia and not starting, you would have devalued his ability to start and contribute immediately. Sherman was in a similar spot at Georgia and has been modestly effective at Nebraska. So between Sherman and Wright we have 2 players that were going to be hard pressed to play at their previous schools that are starters here. Outside of this year’s DLine, I don’t think there is a position, that a second team guy from top program, wouldn’t have came into the Nebraska locker room and pushed for immediate playing time.

The difference to me is proving it. I'm also not sure if he checked out of football for acting before or after he got demoted.

I hope he does start. Lord knows we need someone to come in a be a playmaker.

Try again, maybe some of the coaches thought Wright could be a big contributor, but nobody on this board did.
From the Huskers website: In his final season at USC in 2023, Wright played in seven games with four starts and totaled 11 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss and three pass breakups.

Can't speak for others. I know I personally called him a godsend and just what the doctor ordered, while also touting his experience. He was indeed a godsend. An experienced natural cover corner.

It's quite possible that Wright will be drafted higher than the other corners he would have competed with outside of Lassiter who went pretty high in the 2nd round. For the people who care about such things, he was ranked higher out of HS than some guys that have started for them. Would Wright have ever started at least one game at Georgia? Odds are pretty good that he would have.

I’m not sure the message was could he have grabbed a spot start? I get he played well., But he did not beat out Buford to start the season and really only started for Nebraska because Hill was injured. But does not strike me as the type of coach that is going to play favorites.

I'm just speculating but some of those plays Wright made like the pick six and especially the blocked FG looked like the types of plays we see those elite Georgia, Alabama athletes make. I think he would belong on the field at a place like Georgia. As for this season at Nebraska, he came in late it just took him a while to get going. And then there was a new DB coach as well so as Butler & Rhule did say, early on it was all about getting the starters ready (Colorado was looming). So I think Wright just got left out initially, but he improved quickly as he (and the new DB coach) got settled in.

There are definitely guys that play better in practice and guys that play better in games. I've got one in my household. Watch her practice and you're like, meh. Then the games start and she hits .400 every year.

That's on the coaches. Wright was making plays immediately. Coaches playing the guys they are familiar with instead of best.

He was kind of an after thought being a mid-summer transfer, but he is a big-time talent. Multiple people in his family played Pac-12 football and some short NFL careers. 78th ranked player in his class by 247. Seemed to be pretty decent at track.

Odds are pretty good that he wouldn't have. Georgia's had a top defense and studs everywhere for several years running. Wright would have been just another guy there.

That kind of was my point in comparing Wright’s and this kid’s situation. Yeah Wright played more but had been passed over for whatever reason. Seems like our DB coaches did a good job getting him to a place where he could exhibit his talent. Hopefully they do the same with our transfers who have similar athletic ability.

I assume every single player UGA has is better than what we have

So maybe this pertains to some, but not me

Anytime we get a kid from there I expect him to start right away and make an impact regardless of whether he played there or not

That is the point. People are not expecting Rhett to come in as some developmental depth guy, let alone start. Maybe he won’t start or play, but like you, I believe the rosters at top schools are much deeper and the talent should start over a great number of the starters we have at Nebraska.

Rhule took 3 players from UGA prior to this guy? 2 barely/never played and 1 started 5 games his first year.

Makes me wonder why they are bringing in transfers every year, but sure, whatever you say.
