Portal Offers and Visits

Dana called Donnie "as good of an O line coach as I've been around" in the press conference this week. He would like to find a couple of high level EXPERIENCED O linemen in the portal but that doesn't mean that Donnie hasn't been doing a good job. It means there was a hole in recruiting Frost's last two years. Gottula and Lutovsky came in after injuries and played pretty damned well. I think the young guys will be just fine but it's expected a lot to expect 19 year olds to come in and perform on the O line in the B1G. Look at OSU's recruiting and yet they still had problems on their O line this past season.
OSU's O line problems may just cost them a national title when they should be clear favorites. Consequences don't care about excuses.

There are multiple guys waiting in the wings but their babies. You know that. Dana would like a couple of experienced B1G starters on the 2 deep but IF not Donnie will get the kids ready. You're crusade is going nowhere. Dana has his back
they'll continue to be forced to plug in portal guys to start over this fictional multitude of "guys waiting in the wings".

OL is the one place where cohesiveness is paramount. being together for a long time means a lot.

donnie gets a lot of platitudes from the coaching staff while consistently putting out a shit unit & failing to over recruit underperformers.

I believe what I see, not what I hear from the head cheerleader in North Stadium.

"a hole in frost's recruiting"

the only season Frost didn't bring in a single OL was the year he turned that room over to uncle donnie, who 3 years later still failed to land better guys than Frost did prior to him getting here.

It seems to me, without looking at the numbers, that we have more WR and DB than any other position. We keep getting told "we want to establish the run and stop the run". Ok fine. Then we need to emphasize more both lines and RBs and LB. DBs shouldn't be our leading tacklers. Kinda means atleast 5 to 7 yard gains
NU opponents averaged 3.8 yards per rush this season.

this doesn't seem to match the din of your post

wish I was surprised

we are in dire need of both starters and depth at every position along the OL

that unit has been terrible under our longest tenured assistant, Uncle Donnie the mascot

I also very much doubt the accuracy of your quote and would like to see it sourced when you have a moment.

I dug into this myself today...Nebraska is the ONLY B10 team to not have a RB have a long run of 50+ yards in the past 3 seasons. Not that it is easy to pop these off, but this is embarrassing. We've had a few WR and a QB do it but the backs needs to make plays happen. EJ had the long of 42 this season.

here are all of our explosive plays from last year and this year thru the ohiost game:
here's the game log:

@minn - zero 40+ yard plays
@CU - 1 50+ yard run (sims), 1 40+ yard run (r johnson)
vsN ILL - none
vsLa Tech - 1 70+ yard run (HH), 1 40+ yard run (HH)
vsMich - 1 50+ yard pass (Marcus Washington), 1 70+ yard run (Fleeks)
@ILL - none
vsNW - 1 40+ yard pass (Coleman)
vsPur - 1 70+ yard pass (Lloyd), we also had a 68 yard FG Blk return
@Sparty - 1 40+ yard run (HH)
vsMD - none
@wisc - 2 50+ yard plays (purdy run, Lloyd catch)
vsIowa - 1 60+ yard pass (Lloyd)

12 total 40+ yard plays, 4 50-60 yard plays, 1 60-70 yard play, 3 70+ yard plays.

and 1 additional 60+ yard play on special teams.

this year's game log:

vsUTEP - 1 40+ yard run (E Johnson), 1 50+ yard catch (Neyor)
vsCU - none
vsUNI - 1 50+ yard catch (Lloyd)
vsILL - 1 40+ yard catch (Neyor)
@PUR - none
vsRUT - none
@IU - none
@OSU - none

a significant decline in explosive plays overall, just 1 single 40+ yard run all year so far

last year we averaged exactly 1 40+ yard play per game. this year, it's been cut in half to 0.5 40+ yard plays per game.
might be 1 or 2 to add down the stretch, including EJ's long run.
