Poll: POB to Redshirt?

Will POB redshirt this year?

  • 1 Yes, definitely. He'll benefit more by sitting out early rather than playing early.

  • 2 Yes. But we'll burn the redshirt if TA is injured or we're doing poorly.

    Votes: 42 47.2%
  • 3 Maybe. There's only talk about "intending" to redshirt, coaching ploy to bring out the best.

    Votes: 8 9.0%
  • 4 Maybe not. Jordan Stevenson demanded playing time,...and we played him.

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • 5 No. Redshirts are confirmed at the end of the year. He's good. He'll play.

So the Journal Star has an article with Langsdorf talking about POB redshirting. According to Langsdorf, POB had a mixed reaction.

The folks at HuskerCorner write up an article that has a more ominous feel to it. They equate "mixed reaction" to "bad reaction".

Fall camp hasn't started yet. If POB is gonna play, he's gonna need to be a showstopper in fall camp. Is it kosher to vote in your own poll? Oh well, I'm picking 1 yes, definitely.

I don't think he sees the field. He'll practice a lot and get down the system. We don't need him this year if the coach sticks to the talent he has on the field. And Tommy sticks to the playbook and either takes the sack or throws it away if there is no play to be had. Sometimes the defense has you covered. At that time is to just run as fast as you can and take anything you can. I love TA, but he's not a Crouch. That was one tough and fast dude.

from reading the tea leaves he should probably redshirt unless he makes a huge jump in fall camp

Fife is probably our 2nd best QB in this system (despite the Purdue debacle)

I predict Tanner Lee is our starting QB in 2017

furthermore I would like us to continue to be in the market for potential transfers until either POB or Gebbia proves they can play at this level .... so many unknowns at QB when trying to project to the next level - there are simply no guarantees

I hope we are keeping an eye on the baylor QB - Stidham who is leaving the program

I agree. If the QBs can't compete then they aren't the leaders they think they are. That's what we need. Leaders. Whose the best manager of the game. That's the guy who'll lead the Huskers. i don't weep for Wilson. He wasn't up for the challenge. NU should take the best and not settle.

I'd be disappointed if he did because I'd take that to mean he's no better than Fyfe, who shouldn't be the #2 QB at a school like Nebraska anyway.

you are absolutely correct ... but POB is a true freshman .. which would be a lot to ask
If he isn't better than Fife this year I don't put that on POB but rather the fact that we don't have a redshirt freshman or soph to assume the role

we needed a viable option in the 2015 class ... potential big, big mistake not getting a QB in that class ... Riley is staking his entire future on 2 guys who have never taken a D1 snap (POB and Gebbia) and a tulane transer. If none of those 3 are ready to go in 2017 the season and his tenure is sunk. Which is why I still feel we are in the market for a JUCO or transfer.

And no I haven't forgot about Bush .. just don't see him as an option.

Well, I agree that Riley is staking his future on 3 guys. I think he needs to do so to turn around this program. He needs to prove once and for all that he is a great evaluator of talent, recruiting said talent, at QB development and in game preparation. If he's not up to the task we will find out. Was 6-7 an adjustment, a fluke, or is that the best we can do? That's what this season will show. If Riley can't handle the pressure of being the decision maker at a big school then he will not last long. I think that we are on the right path. Year one changing the culture; weeding out the cancer. Year two recruiting your type of player. I'm looking to seeing what Riley can do. I'm still on board. He gets at least three years minimum, barring a team implosion. If he improves recruiting, team discipline and shows progress every year then I will push to extend his time @ NU. It's that simple. We were in contention in most every game last year. No reason we can't turn most of those L's into W's. I am very hopeful for the coming year. Well... except for the DTs. Let's just say that I'm going to hope for the best.

POB may have the skills and toolset we're looking for, but he doesn't have the experience, just a few days in spring practice. Riley likes experience, especially at qb. imo, lack of experience is the big drawback.

good points .. agree

the only thing that gives me pause is that in 2017 POB will probably be a redshirt freshman and Gebbia will be a true freshman .. neither having taken a live snap. Riley could have a great eye for talent but not sure either of those guys will have had time to develop --- too young. 2017 is going to be a pivotal year - if we don't have competent QB play by this time it is going to negate a bunch of the talent we have at other positions and Riley is going to be on the ropes.

Anyone recall the circumstances in 2015 as to why we didn't take a QB

The big edge POB has over Gebbia is physical maturity. Gebbia looks slender by high school standards and will probably need a redshirt year just to get bigger. It's great that we are getting big time qb recruits but obviously both guys will expect to play fairly soon. It would be surprising if either guy will be satisfied with second string for long. And that doesn't even take into consideration the possibility that the Tulane transfer might beat them both out for a couple years.

I believe Lee will just have one year to play - 2017. Which if he is competent will be perfect to allow Gebbia and POB to mature and be ready for 2018

Agreed. That would be the ideal situation. Get everyone to buy in. Play the system. As long as you play within your abilities and follow the game plan we should only get better and better. No need to panic yet. Give the young guys time to develop and mature, both mentally and physically.

If Patrick O'Brien can beat out Fyfe for #2 then he should not redshirt, in my opinion. Even if Armstrong takes the majority of snaps, there is still a lot of experience to be gained by preparing like you are one play away from going into the game. Further, I think I'd rather have O'Brien taking snaps and building rapport with the top units as opposed to running the scout team or something like that.

I understand the temptation to preserve that extra year of eligibility, but the program is in a fragile state and we need to follow up a strong 2016 with an equally strong 2017 and that requires our QB hitting the ground running. If Fyfe plays well enough in fall camp to retain the back-up role then more power to him. What's best for the team NOW is the most important thing.

A 3/4 star named Kevin Dillman committed in the spring. He was from Sweden or somewhere in Europe and had been playing football only for awhile. Here is where my memory gets sketchy. I think he transferred to a big football school in Texas, but the state board (or somebody) said it was an illegal transfer and he didn't get to play his senior year. Beck stuck with him, but when the new coaches came in December, Langs didn't want him and they gave the schollie to the TE they had been recruiting to OSU (Snyder). It was too late to find a decent QB and we already had TA, Bush, Darlington on schollie and Fyfe. Dillman wasn't happy because Eichorst said we would honor previous offers, but I assume the new staff felt the offer the previous spring was contingent on the player playing his senior year, so they wiggled out of it.

Because Tim Beck is a f%$&ing moron, and didn't offer Joe Burrow. The Nebraska legacy that would have almost committed to Nebraska on the spot and likely would have stayed with Nebraska even after an Ohio State offer, but he's now the backup behind J.T. Barrett and will likely start once he's gone.

I voted no redshirt. If the guy doesn't want to redshirt, he shouldn't have to. On one hand if Fyfe performs well enough to be #2, then he has earned that spot. Not naming him #2 could be bad for morale and isn't "the Nebraska Way". However, even if POB is not quite as good as Fyfe it might be better to get him some snaps this year looking to the future even if it isn't fair to Ryker. This is why coaches make big bucks to make decisions.

As far as true freshman QBs not having enough experience, somebody forgot to tell that to Hackenberg (217 yards in the snow in PSUs 2013 overtime loss), Brad Kaaya (359 yards in Miami's loss in 2014) or Tanner Mangum (111 yards on last three drives including the winning Hail Mary with no time left last year for BYU).

Yeah, I suspect Burrow got pissed after the Dillman commit and committed to tOSU shortly thereafter in May.

If I am POB I would go though fall practice and if I am going to play I stay if I am not going to play I'll redshirt somewhere else. The Calabasas love fest is hard to ignore

I didn't before, but now that half our staff came from Oregon St, I put the little t in there to tell the two programs apart :)
Thats why a lot of us did. ... It is a wonder, after so many posts read; I start to get the feel the board is looking for a new "pipeline" , of a sort; a series of qb's who are juniors when they are handed the reins and play error free Manning ball. This is a great developing system; we have a lot of skill players - ANY qb who can make all the throws, can beat out the world; if he can make decisive decisions in progressions and simply deliver. Especially this level of qb recruit; add to that any early enrollee and/or redshirt experience - thats easily more than enough time for these men to deliver. As many point out; there are many examples elsewhere; every year. GBR

This could very well be an NFL factory.

Any time a player redshirts in this day and age, it increases the odds that they will graduate transfer after 4 years, or at least consider it..

Why redshirt him if we will lose him because of it. Let him play if the opportunity. presents itself. If he is good enough to start next year. we will still have a top notch back up in the transfer QB. At the end of the day, if I am going to watch our QB throw 3,4 or 5 interceptions a game, I would prefer a learning POB over a multi year TA.

Yet, two coaching staffs have said positive things about Fyfe and he continues to beat out the hot young recruited QBs. I think maybe Fyfe just isn't so bad, but we can't imagine the possibility of a backup D1 player coming from the state of Nebraska. Yes, Fyfe in his first start threw plenty of interceptions, but he also had quite a nice day in yardage in TDs to go along with it. I think the coaches really messed him up with all the passes, but he was pretty damn good for a first start.

It makes sense to redshirt POB. Passing a senior #2 who has starting experience isn't easy for a true freshman in an offense like Riley's, despite the fact they may be emphasizing play action more in 2016. There's also a good chance Lee starts in 2017.

Just want to remind everyone that if we get all of the stud receivers we are currently in on (or a lot of them) then I feel that excellent quarterbacks will want to come to Lincoln in the near future. I am not worried if POB will or won't redshirt for this reason. Lee, POB, and Gebbia can all throw the ball.
