The board seems to have some varying opinions on how we think we'll finish in recruiting. Heck, there's less than 2 months left. Here's your chance to cast your vote, call the shot before the numbers are in.

So Porcher leaves. A faint cloud of uncertainty surrounds Guy Thomas. But we may get Graham and a host of other recruits.

Right now, we're sitting at 36th with 14 commits, one spot behind Oregon State (w/ 18 commits), which is kind of funny (not haha funny) when I think about it. It sounds like we can take 22, maybe more when signing day comes Feb 1st.

Just for a comparison, if we land 8 more 5.7 3* players, we'd have around 1900 points which should get us closer to 20th than to 25th. So do we land the blue chippers and shoot up the rankings, or do we have some after Christmas shopping to do?

So the bash on OSU is that you cant recruit to the Beavs but they are ahead of us as of now? Hmmm
I think you know that is a silly comparison at this time and very misleading. They have 18 commits and a 3.0 star average. While we have 14 and a 3.36 average. In fact we have 4 4-stars who have already signed financial aide papers while they only have two committed. I don't think anyone would trade spots with them.

If this class finishes in the 25ish range, I will consider it a disappointment. It was setting up to be a top 10 type of class, but we have missed out on some targets and the finish is centered around some big names that will make or break this class. We need some good news soon as it's been awhile since our last commit. Hopefully Graham ends that tomorrow. It's awesome that we have been able to get some monsters in to visit, but we have to finish on some. There is no second place or moral victories in recruiting. Either you get a recruit or you don't.

I like following the recruiting process but I stop there. I do not get caught up in the rankings. There are just too many factors that aren't accounted for. Example, I could recruit 6 5-star OL to add to the 10 other 5-star OL on my roster but recruit zero DLinemen to my thin roster of DLinemen. That class would rank the same as a class with 3 5-star OLinemen and 3 5-star OLinemen. Makes no sense to me

In my OPINION I think roster management plays a greater role than what gets accounted for in rankings. Having an appropriate number of players at each position is more important to me than collecting players.

Id be willing to bet Nebraska ends up at least 20 spots ahead of Oregon State. Oregon State will end up between 40 and 50 which is par for the course

Having paid more attention last year, I took some data to help me understand rankings. I've updated the numbers and here's scores correspondings to rankings:

At least from my perspective, 21 to 25 should be a pretty easy mark for us this year. That's why I chose 16 to 20.

This is what recruiting rankings mean to me. When you consider contributing or not contributing, the better your starting hand (ranking), the better chance you have to field a better team. It is a generality, not a fact for any given class (i.e. the 2011 class). But I believe it generally holds true, and that the law of averages would play out (i.e. consistently better rankings would consistently field better teams).

If this class finishes in the 25ish range, I will consider it a disappointment. 25ish would also be a disappointment for me as well. I just have to think that we will land some of these big name, late commit targets. I'll be crossing my fingers.

Oh, btw, I didn't mention OrSU to start some kind of comparison. Barring catastrophe on our part, or divine intervention on their part, there's no way they'll be close to us after signing day. I just thought it was funny that they would be one spot ahead of us (not haha funny).

Some Numbers to go along with nebcountry's post

If nebraska only adds 8 more commits and finishes off the class with 8 middle ranked 3 stars the class would get 1896 points. Good for top 25 any of the previous 5 seasons

If they get G. Holmes, J. Calvin, D. Daniels, D. Lenoir and 4 middle ranked 3 stars the class would get 2052 points good enough for top 20 in any of the previous 5 classes

If Nebraska strikes gold and gets Sarrell, Lewis, Shelvin, filiaga, Johnson, Blades, Calvin and lenoir the class would get 2676 points which would be top 5 in any of the previous 5 seasons

Yeah, I picked 16-20 just to be safe; it looks like we're not getting Graham, but we're getting Hafiz instead, followed by whoever else rolls in over the next month and a half. I have a feeling we'll maybe even break the top 15, but I'm trying to get my expectations to be lower on purpose.

I'll go on record.
26-30
In other words, well be right around where we have been for the last several years.

We're not gonna be winning Big 10 titles or sniffing playoffs unless we're CONSISTENTLY top 15 in recruiting. If we can't get there we'll continue chasing our tails, win 9 games against mediocre teams, and get blown out against solid competition in primetime games. We won't improve our national perception as a "has been" program that is in a constant state of mediocrity/stagnation. So.........round and round we go, just as we have for the last 20 years! At some point we have to close on great athletes throughout the roster.
