According to 247 notes from today's practice POB spends half his time with scout team and half his other snaps with Husker 1st string offense. I find this very interesting. I personally like the idea of it so he knows the offense better, be it for this year or next.

Over the years I've read about redshirt freshman having issues "learning the offense".
To me, they should have learned it while redshirting.

Let's not forget the bond that Langs and Cav have (donating an organ to a friends wife probably creates a tremendous bond). Maybe the move to the booth where Cav and Langs can work together is what the play calling needs.

To be fair this site has him saying that he was getting reps with the "Varsity Offense" That means the travel squad. Not necessarily the first group.

It would make sense to get the kid reps with the varsity to get him acclimated to the offense for next year. It would not make sense to give him reps with the 1st group. Can you imagine the s*** storm if Armstrong went down with a minor injury and Fyfe came in with no reps with the first group? If there is somebody besides Tommy Armstrong getting reps with the first team it would be Fyfe. There's only so many reps in practice with the first group, you've got to give them to your starter and his immediate back up.

Now obviously I'm not out there so I could be wrong. But it would make no sense for POB to get reps with the first squad. It would make a ton of sense for him to get reps with the the 2nd/3rd groups though (also a part of the "varsity offense"). Especially with a D1 experienced kid (Tulane transfer) able to run the scout team.

Either way kudos to Langs and Riley for doing that. You throw the kid a bone and he gets some good experience using the language.

I just checked the LJS and their article matches to what you say this site reported. Weird that 247 would do that.

As well you should. TA has many 70% completion quarters in this system, for real - the beloved coaches glowing comments on his running ability come often and include it has broadened the coaching horizon comments. This is not what is driving the so called haters crazy ( see Iowa game / there are a few haters and a lot of frustration ). GBR

As I have said before, I am a TA fan. The kid has game and is amazingly athletic. I also think his passing accuracy is much better than people give him credit for. And certainly his arm strength is stellar. Like all QB's he has his weaknesses too. His screen passes are a crap shoot, and, obviously, he sometimes makes very poor decisions. In many ways he reminds me of Bret Favre. An amazing ability to both win games for you and lose games for you. But overall, a guy you want playing for you rather than your opponent.

I'm sure POB is taking reps with the 1st team O, but it wouldn't make sense for half his reps to be with the 1's. TA will be taking the majority of the reps with the 1st O and Fyfe will need some as well, so that doesn't leave too many for POB. My guess is he takes half with the scout team and half with the top offenses (1's, 2's and 3's).

An upright or slightly nicked up TA means POB keeps the redshirt on for the season. If Tommy's season ends early, I think Fyfe may get a chance first with ZD in short relief. POB is getting reps with the regular offense in part as an insurance policy and because we have the transfer operating the scout team.
Tommy has some limitations which are largely due to decision making. But he has athleticism that you cannot teach. If the and OL and RBs can be productive, it will take the pressure off of TA and will allow him to be more naturally creative. I liked the way he looked in the Bowl game.

I agree. People are reluctant to leave the POB train as far as contributing for this year though, however much the coaching staff seems to want to put that baby to bed.

This. With Lee waiting in the wings with two years left to play, it is imperative we preserve the redshirt of POB to the extent we can. The only scenario I can see where he burns the shirt is if Tommy goes down for the year.

If Armstrong should get injured early in the season, I agree. Mid-season or later, I say Fyfe it up.

It's a different Fyfe this year. I forgot he left school last summer and came back 20-30 lbs underweight and out of shape. Reports say that he's looked great as the #2.

Good call by coaches to get kids into learning the system, even if they redshirt. It's a better use of their time in preparation for when their number gets called.

Concur. There are obviously many factors to consider.

history has shown us we need to have more than one qb prepared to play and make plays. getting pob ready is certainly something any coach with half a brain would do with a qb whose arguably best asset is running the football.
