I thought Rhule tried to hire him originally when Rhule first came to Lincoln and Snow turned him down. Wonder what changed his mind.

Yeah we all know what an associate is, but it is typically a title given to a position coach or coordinator.. not all on its own. In tangible terms, what is he going to do? What is the scale of his impact as part of this team? Is this a remote position? Is Rhule planning on passing away soon?
Dude will basically tell Butler how to run the defense. And will probably serve as our Interim HC as we enter November sitting at 3-6.
What'll it cost man what'll it cost!!
We've got a 7+ million dollar hc and now associate head coach. Would have been better to spend more on a GREAT DC????

Dannen afraid of fund raising this should have/was an opportunity to knock it out of the park only to be a tip foul with 2 strikes, down by 3 with no one on base with 2 outs.

Snow at least won't be learning on the job. Think back to some of the grad assistants Pelini promoted on his staff. We now have 3 guys on our defensive staff who have coached in the NFL.
His expertise supposedly is safeties. He's definitely qualified to manage Butler if need be.
Wasn't what I expected but none of us know if he's a good hire until we see it. I've stated this multiple times now. The portal forced Rhule's hand earlier than he maybe wanted to decide. We couldn't afford to go through this time period without a DC and D line coach. He almost HAD to make the hire now and several of the guys he was interested in are coaching in the playoffs.
That's just a ringing endorsement if I've ever seen one.
To be fair he was the last option I hoped we ended up with. I was looking for a splash now and this wasn't it.
You can argue why but why let White walk if you didn't have someone setup to immediately upgrade?

we weren't going to hire Notre Dame's DC as some have suggested. We at least talked to a couple of guys coaching in the playoffs. Tough sale to leave a playoff team for a 6-6 team.
Rhule went with safe/predictable hires for continuity and familiarity. Butler has been a DC and promoting him allows us to continue in the same defense easier. Meanwhile, Phil Snow—who has spent decades coaching defense—will obviously be focused on that side of the ball too to make sure things go smoothly.

That last line sounds like Iowa justification. Just sayin.
If we had hired a young guy from SMU or Toledo's DC everybody would be wringing their hands about their lack of experience in the B1G. Anxiety is what we do best.
I wanted us to go for someone like Jim Leonhard, so I am not justifying it. It’s just my take.
Retrospectively, Phil Snow was probably inevitable here given their history.

I wish the program would afford us optimism though. We are anxious because we have sucked so long.
That all makes sense.
But it means we have yet another situation where Ruhle lacked foresight to see what was coming, and was forced to suddenly change after things are clearly slipping.
Exactly what could he have done differently? Even if he knew Tony was leaving, how could he have hired a new DC before it actually happened? Who expected Pot Roast to stab us in the back like that and take half our depth on the D line? No amount of foresight could have prevented this situation. It's just a fact of life now with the portal, NIL and the playoff. In the past, assistants didn't normally move until right after the class was signed in January or if they did earlier you had time to fill their spots before signing day.
Maybe we need to look harder at hiring Nebraska guys to run our program. Does anybody doubt that Bill Busch could have been a successful head coach even thought he's never done it? I sure as hell don't. Frank's coordinators at Ohio would have been better than most of the guys we've had since Frank was fired and they were both Nebraska guys. Albin is their head coach now and he won the conference with a blowout win in their conference championship game. Burrow was Frank's DC until he retired to watch Joe's senior year at LSU.
NCAA football is a screwed up mess and it definitely has affected what Rhule was logically able to do to replace Tony. I think he has hit home runs with Dana, Simpson, and the DL and WR coaches. Butler may very well be the best we could attract to a 6-6 team due to the situation with the portal timing and playoff.
And it turns out they were better than the guy our AD forced on him. Several of Riley's assistants are still coaching. Trent Bray was in his second year as the head coach at Oregon State. Cavanaugh is on Oregon's staff. Banker I think is retired but he was better than some thought. The guy damned well knew football. Riley's weak spot was recruiting enough P5 talent and then team discipline in the weight program. He believed in player led programs but we didn't have that kind of leadership. It wasn't a lack of knowledge or teaching ability.
Bo's best rated class was 22nd vs Riley's at 20.

Riley had some guys who were falling in the rankings who were 4 stars when they were ranked. Several of them never played much at all. One 4 star OG we supposedly stole from OU only played special teams. He was bad. We had a TE who was a high 4 star we snatched from somebody, maybe from Wisconsin, and he never amounted to anything. i think he quit football after 2 years. There were more. He did snatch a few guys who turned out pretty good on offense. Can't remember the RB he took away from ISU at the last minute. I think Banker was actually a pretty good coach and firing him cost Riley a winning season his last year.
I don’t get why anyone wouldn’t like the Snow hire. There are unlimited coaches and the guy has an impressive track record. This is a positive.
I see 2011 was higher rated when I went year by year so I stand corrected. 2013 was 22 in the composite.
This really isn't far off Riley's classes and an average would end up with coaches being equal or Riley being slightly ahead.
Now did those recruits pan out and why is a very different discussion. But I remember winning off season with Riley and Bo. Where did that land us?
Albin took the head coaching job at Charlotte two days ago. I don’t know if that is a step up or a lateral move.
He had an impressive track record 5 years ago

I don't like the hire because it implies that once again we hired someone that needs OJT in Butler. And we already basically have an associate HC in Holgorsen. Someone with a ton of actual head coaching experience. And everything I read on Phil Snow was that he wanted a chill role after Carolina so he could ride off into the sunset. Now we have a guy we begged to come out retirement.
To top it all off, you usually use that associate head coach title to lure a good coach who wants that on his resume. For instance, we could have lured a good, experienced DC and put associate HC in there.
Shhhh. Everyone knows what they are talking about, look no further than the 98% approval rating of the hiring of the worst HC in Nebraska history.
I had heard he did a good job in Chicago last year and helped turn that defense around.
My confidence in my or anyone’s take on how worthy a HC is took a permanent hit with Frost.
