Our coach today is Mike Riley. A good man, a good coach, who is highly respected for a lot of reasons, and rightfully so. But, not respected for winning necessarily. I would like for nothing more then for Mike Riley and Staff to remain here. But, he is not going to win enough, which really sucks. Bottom line, if you lose to Northern Illinois, you better beat Wisconsin. That didn't happen and 7-5 is probably the best we can do, and it was an ugly 7-5, assuming that happens. The writing is so bold on the wall, that we will have a coaching change in December. Additionally, we are going to lose 50%, maybe more, of this class, unless certain staff members are retained.
These things are not factual, but sure feel extremely probable. We need to be ok with it, and not completely come unraveled by de-commitments, and coaching rumors of who is coming and not coming. Or, run down the rabbit hole of insecurity of what if a coach doesn't want to come here? It's the end of the program. If you can win here, KSU, Boise State, Eugene, OR or anywhere that is not on the beaten path, you can win huge again. It's not easy, but Florida isn't winning, and we've win more games than Texas in the pat 5 years. So, who knows right? Bottom line, don't become unglued. But, yes, it sucks...All of it.
We look pretty foolish already. I have no idea how many people said negative things to Bookie via Twitter, but that decommit happened weeks ago. If you didn't know that was going to happen, when you have a dead man walking at head coach week 5, you are crazy. More will come, and that's ok, because the situation at NU is changing. Put all of your money in a stock that has a massive amount of uncertainty at the moment. Does that sound like a good idea? No, it's a horrible idea.
IF Scott Frost is not hired by NU, and we hire someone else, or hell, although extremely unlikely, if we keep this staff, due to some unreal savior of a run through the next 4 games. We need to keep some sort of sanity and perspective, at least in the short term. Listening to Bill Moos, I have a lot of confidence that he will put us in the right situation from a coaching/Admin perspective. He knows what he wants, and he has the track record to prove it.
There's a ton of great coaches out there. We have very good coaches now. We will make the right hire for what we need, and kids will come, because we will win. We will have a winning culture, and will provide whatever resources are required to do it.
