Our Youth concerns me (OT)

Off season so quick comment on an OT matter. I believe most of those that read this board at a minimum reside in America and frankly most were born here. We are Husker fans clearly by our frequenting of this page. What I want to ask is whether anyone here observes a decline in our youth or perhaps could they be accelerating? My sister is a teacher and says that most kids these days are matter of factly dumb. But was this always the case? Ultimately I think there is a Kenny Bell curve to consider. Some kids are going to be at the bottom and some at the top 10% whereas 80% might be what my sister classified as matter of factly dumb. It’s a pickle of a question but what say you?

yes, those later things did indeed exacerbate it. But the nuclear family of the 1950s to mid 1960s was held up by unheralded post-war time circumstances along with networks of nuclear families working together. Alone, the nuclear family is very unstable. The pros are freedom and autonomy. The cons are anxiety, depression, stress, unless you are financially able to purchase 3rd party help that extended families/communities historically provided.

Progressives have no plan because they view all family arrangements as equal and don't wanna be judgmental. Extended family living arrangements are becoming the norm due to necessity.

The vast majority of families throughout history were multigenerational and very extended. It wasn't until cities became a thing and prosperity allowed for such a family structure that it became common. Immigrants, people from other countries almost exclusively lived in extended family homes. And if they did have their own homes, it wasn't across state lines. It was down the street.

Kids are way less capable than a couple generations ago. It’s staggering, and it’s obvious. Degradation of two-parent families and public schools are squarely to blame.

Too much time spent on mindless screens and not out there "doing" that teaches you how things work, how to think, how to make/build stuff. It wasn't necessarily "cool" but I was in Boy Scouts and I learned a shit ton about how to get things done, be resourceful, use my brain. My dad taught me how to use tools, how to fix stuff, etc. It doesn't all have to come from being "book smart." I feel like society today is a lot more helpless than they used to be...more mental health issues...anxiety...etc.

Yes but what should be more important is how to get access to information when one needs it. Hardly any profession has everything memorized, unless their job is streamlined. Lawyers, doctors, etc all have resources they pull from unless they only work in one small field and do the same things day in, day out, which then wouldn't really need endless years of study.

Kids are 100% connected to their classes now. There is no "bell rings at 3 and you are done" assignments are loaded up at all hours of the day, the work never stops. Missing a day of school? sucks for you BUT everything is online so you can still get it done. AP classes are higher, dual enrollment classes, more readily available than ever!

Sports? Gone are the days of showing up August 8th for the first practice...you are lifting/conditioning year round.

Parents not knowing where you are at? NOPE! Thanks life 360!

Starts at home is correct. In college, the student who is respectful and has a hard work ethic comes from mostly farm kids. It seems like they know the meaning and value of hard work. City kids just don't have the discipline or work ethic as much. Just my observation.

We always had this stuff in our youth, but it wasn't law. IEP's (Individual Education Plans) are geared for kids that have ADD and whatnot. They learn a little different, but otherwise look like every other kid. Those are more non-legal unlike 504's. The latter is geared for kids that you and I knew as SPED. The interesting thing is in terms of college resumes, a TON more kids now have 504's. It is as if the parents of the world learned of a loophole, a shortcut if you will. A cheat code. He wires houses and small businesses. He told me the average age of skilled contractors he sees at job sites to be in the 50's. Stuff he was doing in his twentys. Mike Rowe is right. Send your "stupid" kids to trade school and watch them make twice as much as their "much more educated" classmates.

I'd recommend you read some books. The millennials will be okay, but the zoomers are softer than baby s***. They truly are America's weakest generation. And one of the smallest to boot. We've got major problems
