OT: what's your favorite scary movie?

The Exorcist, Hereditary, Midsommar, The Shining, Event Horizon, Halloween, The Pope’s Exorcist.

I like the psychological and demonic possession type of horror movies. Not really into the monster/slasher ones.
Midsommar was turrable .. snooze fest the first 60 mins then went full porno 🤣🤣

It was definitely one of the odder movies I have seen. I did go back and watch it a second time. I enjoyed it. A far more gruesome "odd" movie was Antichrist starring Willem Defoe. I wouldn't recommend it unless you enjoy really horrible stuff.

Alien (Gold Standard for me)
Aliens
The Descent
Signs
Silence of the Lambs
The Thing
Exorcist
Poltergeist
Evil Dead 2
Fire in the Sky (long, dramatic build with amazing ending)
Hills have Eyes (remake)
Midsommar
Hereditary
Nope
Get Out
Cabin in the Woods

The Exorcist (original). Not a fan of the genre, but that movie was great. I went and saw Nightmare on Elm Street at the theater. Laughed so hard because it was so corny and not scary. I'm sure I pissed off those that were there to enjoy the show.

It's the season of spooky movies.
The og IT scared the hell out me when I was little.
But my favorite would be Childs Play 1-3. They all suck after that.
Honorable mention
The shining
Christine.. would like to see the car get melted down and turned into a new killing machine
Well, Christine is getting remade so maybe you'll get your wish. :)

Im a big vincent price fan too. Pit and the pendulum is the ultimate creepy price. House on haunted hill is good, too.
Night of the living dead is great. Conjuring.
I remember my oldest brother had a classmate over to watch it. I was probably 6 or 7. The sound of the pendulum.....

As a kid, Hell Night (1981) was very scary, the scene of someone coming up from beneath the floor has always freaked me out.

Original Halloween
Friday the 13th

As a little kid:
- The Wizard of Oz (the wicked witch and flying monkeys were pure evil)
- The Birds

As an Adult:
- Whatever the most recent Husker game was. And it’s been on repeat for 6+ years now. Can’t get em out of my head.

Good call on the Birds

Midsommar did not measure up to Hereditary (both directed by Ari Aster), but it was still mesmerizing and lingers with you for a while.

My favorite: Halloween 1978

Others:
Scream 1-2
The Shining
King Kong 1933
Jaws
Alien
Aliens
It (I actually think the first part of the remake is respectable)
The Mummy 1999

The Shining still messes with me mentally to this day. Watching that alone as a 12 year old was a terrible idea.

The imagery and mental struggle doesn't seem all that far fetched for someone completely losing it in a remote place like that.

The Thing is a masterpiece. Kurt Russell was perfect in that role, and it was amazingly well done. Must have watched that film at least a dozen times, and it never gets old.

Of all time The Exorcist for Scariest and Evil Dead for Nostalgia and fun

One that recently was enjoyable and intense was Smile

Have you watched Dr.Sleep. it's a sequel to the shining. There is one scene that was real hard to watch.

Ha. I'm old now, and I simply can't watch that stuff anymore.

Got enough problems at hand, being scared shitless is no longer on my calendar.

I mean Nightmare On Elm Street and Friday the 13th Part 2 and beyond are stuff I can never watch again.

I’d like to add:

Prometheus
Alien Covenant

Both some of Ridley Scott’s best

I’d classify them more as SciFi but whatever
Alien is my #1 jam of all time! I consider it the perfect horror/sci fi movie. I actually saw Aliens first, and it was very disturbing as a scaredy cat little kid (dont get me started on ET as a 4 or 5 year old). I love both the 'prequels'.

Prometheus is probably the most excited for a movie aside from the LOTR trilogy back in the day. Despite the hate it gets by the snooty movie experts, I loved it. Plot holes aside, dont really care. The self cesarean section scene is an all time gross out scene in any movie for me. Yeah, covenant was a little wacky in parts, but still loved it too.

What plot holes bothered you?

Hills have eyes really messed me up as a 16 year old, I still check the back seat before I get in a vehicle. Daaaadddyyy

I know people have mentioned it, but the original The Thing is my tops. No music leading up to an event, things just happen. The blood test scene was great.

I like the Alien series but I thought Prometheus was rather disappointing/boring.

Not a huge fan of the genre, prefer suspenseful movies, but of the ones I can recall:

. Jeepers Creepers 1
. Us
. The Strangers
. The Descent
. The Others: more suspenseful than scary
. The Devil's Triangle: old movie with Doug McClure; not really scary until the actual final scene/shot
. 30 Days of Night
. The Invaders: not a movie but an old TV series that seriously mind fu#@ed me when I was a little kid

I read the book when I was 15 while I was sleeping alone in the bsmt of a 5 floor house. It was terrifying. I'd recommend the book, but once you read the book the movie loses its luster.
