Helped a friend move the other night and ran across one of these gathering dust in his basement. A Bang & Olufsen Beogram 4004 Tangential Turntable.
He said I could have it, but thought it needed a new stylus. I cleaned it up and it is fully operational but sound is cloudy. He said the cartridges were pricey....... He wasn't kidding. Cheapest I've found is $400! Only one company (Soundsmith) is apparently licensed to sell them in the States and B&O no longer manufactures them. Soundsmith also does refurbs on existing cartridges for $150 to $350.
Anyone have any experience with one of these turntables? They are a practically a work of art, but it's also pushing 40 years old and everything is fully automatic, so I'm a bit leery on how well it will hold up without a complete refurb which costs major $$. But taking a chance on putting a few dollars into a free TT that cost $1100 in 1978 is tempting. Thanks for the input.
