After a thread, a couple weeks ago discussing cruises, and Cruz shore excursions, I was shocked at how many recommended cruise sponsored tours.
As someone who travels quite often, and hates tour groups, I suggest a private local tour guide. Whether a shore excursion, or a two week visit, I feel a private/local tour guide is well worth the added expense (often it’s no more expensive).
We’ve used this website numerous times, and have had very good luck with it. The local guide knows all the secret attractions, & can arrange private (sometimes after hours) tours at the popular ones. They know all the good local nontourist restaurants with authentic, reasonably priced cuisine. More than once, the tour guide ended up being a long time friend, and we stay in contact. I’ve actually hosted a couple here in Santa Barbara.
Am currently planning a trip to Pompeii and looking to book a private tour for the whole two weeks. Nice thing about it is, you generally don’t need to rent a car, as the tour guide provides the vehicle….which offset the cost even more.
