Anyone ever had surgery to repair a torn labrum?

I have a 2" tear across and fairly deep. Golf ball sized cyst underneath all of it from fluid leaking. Pain has gotten borderline unbearable and just got a cortisone shot (which really hasn't helped that much). Dr thinks I need surgery, but said it isn't urgent. Did say I'd be in a sling for up to 8 weeks. It would only be arthroscopic surgery. However, all people that I know that have had shoulder surgery (which is quite a few), said avoid any type of shoulder surgery at all costs.

Thanks, for any feedback.

I had labrum repair on my right shoulder, 4 anchors. Had it done prior to playing college ball. Right shoulder is now better than left.

The rehab sucks, and you have to take it seriously. Probably the worst part was having to wipe my a$$ with my left hand.

A buddy of mine who’s dad had shoulder surgery said it was a damn journey trying to wipe with the opposite hand. You’re the second person I’ve heard say this.

Go see another Dr. or two if you haven't already, second or third opinion can't hurt.

On L shoulder I've had a Labrum repair with 4 anchors and a Bankhart repair. on the R shoulder ive had an AC joint ligament synthetic and cadaver graft. Had no choice for each of the surgeries. The rehab is a marathon not a sprint. concur what others have said about the recliner. I'm a sportsmed specialist Physical Therapist. I'm not the best patient but i have rehabbed many many patients with the same surgeries----so i did have a few tricks up my sleeve. get a shoulder specialist---get recommendations from other shoulder surgery patients. or from local P.T. regarding the surgeon.

I guess I’m odd I use my left hand even though I’m right handed

If you do elect for surgery, make sure you have a recliner you are comfortable sleeping in post op
Recliner is important. Had labrum repair and capsulorrhaphy in 2010. Rehab no fun, at all, but would do it again, if needed on other shoulder, no question. Couldn't put a shirt on without a major struggle, pre-surgery. Worth it. For sure, IMO.

Very similar injury to a torn meniscus in your knee. It might partially heal on it's own. If you've got a desk job and aren't worried about athletic pursuits, it might not hurt to wait. On the other hand, fresh tears heal better and more quickly than old ones. I don't know if there's as great of risk of further damage in a labrum tear as there is in a meniscus tear.
