sorry I know there are things to fight about right now but I need to buy a shotgun.

My son is shooting trap at his school this year and the gun he is using is older than me and just kind of a wreck. He doesn't like over/under and he wants to shoot a 12 gauge.

Id like to get a semi-automatic/ hunt everything gun. I have to keep it under about 800 bucks or my wife will b-slap me.

There is a local shop here in Kearney that sells tri-stars. I've read some reviews and they are almost all positive. The price is certainly right. Any suggestions/opinions?

I don't know that Brand, ( is it made from Russia?), Can't beat Remington, 870 Pump. 30" mod or full. That's what we in trap shoot.

Imported from turkey, I believe. He's got an 870 wing master right now. I guess I could just buy a shorter barrel for it.

Just out of curiosity, what does he not like about over/unders?

He doesn't like the recoil. He's only shot a couple of them, though. He doesn't think he can slaughter as many doves, is another comment he made. I'd say, the guns were split about even between autos and over/under at the one trap shoot we were at. He's just a sixth grader and his shoulder gets a little sore on him I think.

Tristar sells quality firearms. They don't actually make them to my knowledge, they are the state side importer for the company that makes them in Turkey. TriStar's handguns are amazing deals, arguably THE best bang for your buck out there. I don't have any personal experience with their shotguns but have only heard good things.

That being said, what you risk in going with a non mainline brand is availability of parts and accessories. Also, warranty service can be spotty at times. For those reasons, I stay with mainline brands unless I have another gun that can take its place if it breaks.

A Mossberg 930 would fit what you're looking for way under your price range. The one I linked below is a combo with a 28 inch barrel for hunting and an 18.5 inch barrel for home defense. I imagine they also sell rifled barrels for it should you want to hunt with sabot slugs.

I am by no means an expert, more of an enthusiastic amateur. If you need help with the process of buying online, shoot me a message. You will spend ALOT more money by going to a big box store. Almost every single gun I've owned, I've researched it and "fondled" it in the store to make sure it fits me, then bought it on line. The one exception is the CZ P-07 I just bought, nobody around had them to check out.

If recoil is an issue, invest in a Limbsaver Recoil Pad. It really tamed the recoil on my Mossberg 500 compared to the stock recoil pad.

Whatever you buy, go to slickguns.com and search it on there to find the best deal. You'll save yourself alot of money and flak from the wife.

Oh, and you can get the Mossberg cheaper than that if you don't need the shorter barrel.

If he needs a shorter barrel than the 28, the Mossberg 930 also comes in 22 and 24 inch length barrels. If the shotgun was just for him, that home defense barrel in the combo I linked would be kinda pointless.

Appreciate it, good info. I know jack squat about this stuff.

I know you shoot best with a gun YOU believe in. In this case your son. IMO put him to work researching and tell him he will make the best decision if he doesn't get his little buddies involved.

This micro aggression is violating what I consider my safe space!

Exactly. Put him to work in doing the research. When he can explain his choice, congratulate him and go get it (assuming you generally agree with his logic). Guns are personal-preference. Years ago, I chose a Mossberg 500 because of the ergonomics, safety selector location, and slide release location.

took your guys advice and we went and held about everything. The one he liked the best was on the cheap side, lucky me.

Next question, the gun he is currently shooting is a full choke. He has been shooting pretty well, considering his lack of experience. Obviously, the new gun has a couple options with chokes. Stay with the full?

Glad it worked out. It's amazing how cheap and good shotguns are.
To your question, I am not a choker.

By the way, If your son is only 12 yrs old, try and buy 1 oz loads, theirs no reason to blow his shoulder off with 1 and 1/8 loads.# 7 1/2 's are the choice for trap, Skeet # 9's, sporting clays # 8's, or 7 1/2's. depending on weather. Hope this helps.

Paper that thing with the different chokes within trap distances (20-25yds). I shoot full when shooting trap. You will likely find full most effective. Some higher-end trap guns have different choke options that are very similar (basically full).

The ammo is provided by the school. Its Winchester, I haven't looked at how heavy the load is. I would think it is pretty light.

School supplied? Who does he shoot for? Some provide AA. That is my choice when I shoot as well. May be at the meet in Doniphan as well tomorrow to watch my Nephew if the weather is not got for chasing turkeys with my bow.

As someone posted earlier, 1 oz loads will shoot a little softer if he is recoil sensitive but a good recoil pad is a huge bonus. I break a lot more rocks with a full choke when shooting trap but improved modified may work depending on the gun. Sounds like you've already made your choice of guns but an 870 will last him the rest of his life and will work on trap and in the field.

I love my Benelli Nova pump for turkey/waterfowl. Browning Citori over/under for trap and upland birds.

It's affiliated with Kearney Catholic. You can join without going to that school, through 4h. The ammo is different this week. I suppose they buy whatever is the cheapest at cabelas.

My Mom has a early '70's Wingmaster 870 that's never been fired.
I guess she's waiting for somebody to try to break in to try it out.
Best thing for a self-defense gun in your home. Practice enough to get familiar, and hopefully it gathers dust while waiting to be used. Where guns get in trouble is when they walk out the door and start shooting people randomly (by themselves)

If you hunker down in the bedroom and call 911, which is what most people should do, it is one of the best options. A handgun is handy if you have kids or someone else to secure elsewhere in the house. A free hand makes navigating the house easier.

Owned a lot of shotguns, Mosburg kicks like a stubborn mule and Beretta is a beast trying to get parts for. Remington has been the best

I was referring to never having to use it, which is a great thing. But everyone knows I am just waiting inside my door just hoping someone gives me a chance to shoot them.

Unless you know the guy is for sure there to murder you, I'd start with just yelling at them that you know they're in there, to get out, and that you're calling the cops. Burglars don't want to encounter you or anyone else if they can help it. If they're bent on coming through the door, do what you gotta do.

I'll still go shotgun full of birdshot if I have to fire inside a house. Most homes you don't have anywhere that they'd be at a range of more than about 15'. You'd do plenty with some #6 from 5 yards.

Was watching "Hacking the System" on Netflix, not a very good show but they did an interesting series on burglaries. Most of them don't happen late at night, if they're pros they'll watch and learn when you're not home, and most burglaries happen during daylight hours. Showed how they can bump a lock, how parking your car in the driveway instead of the garage is just a huge "HEY THIS IS WHEN I'M NOT HOME" billboard, where most people keep certain crucial items like car keys, cash, etc.

Anecdotal, but just had a friend's buddy post on FB this weekend that his house was burglarized while he was out......and they stole all his handguns.

Don't skimp on that security system.

The beav, where do you live and which security system do you suggest?

Live near Chicago. Parents had an SEI system and there was only ever one entry attempt. Garage door got left open, guy tried to sneak down the back stairs, alarm went off, he ran away.

Any legit service with response is good. And put the signs and stickers all over so they can see that they should pass your house up and look elsewhere.

Sorry Beav, but If somebody breaks in my house when they know somebody is home, I'm gonna go ahead and assume that they don't have a problem killing somebody.

I will shoot them.

Thanks, been looking into a system even though I feel safe where I'm at. I do have pistols here and wouldn't hesitate to use one, but you never know what can happen. Btw I hope you're a Bears fan, I also am a big fan of Chicago period.

Exactly. The locks are for THEIR protection, not mine.
My point is that the easiest win is to make them never want to come in to begin with. Guns are a favorite thing to steal, so they love guys who want a glock more than an alarm. Wait til you're not home, and thanks for the free guns. The gun needs you present to operate it, the alarm does not.

Home invader will probably ask "is that a Daisy"
Then I'll say hell nah, it's a Crosman PowerMaster760 Repeater and this mother is pumped till I could't pump it no more.

back to what choke. I always liked a 28" full for pheasant while one brother prefers 28" modified and another 26". What ever he decides you might want to test the pattern for each choke so he knows.
