OT Rangers/Bluejays

It happens and if Bautista takes the HBP and doesn't have the dirty slide, it would have been over. Now we get another 3-5 hrs of hate! Let's go Rangers! Rougie also looks to have landed a solid shot on Donaldson during the brawl.

Roughned is now one of my favorite players. The Blue Jays are huge crybabies. Never seen a team hang out over the plate as much as they do (while wearing body armor), cry and make a scene when someone pitches them inside. This was all the awesome.

It was a retaliation pitch for last year's playoffs when Bautista did the classless bat flip after hitting the homerun.

Odor popped Bautista after a hard slide by Bautista well past 2nd base. Notice that Bautista is well past the base with his slide. Could have ended Odor's season or career had his foot been planted.

dumb to hit a guy for something that happened last year

It ended the Rangers season. Maybe they should have done it earlier in this season. This was most likely the last at bat for Bautista as it was in the 8th inning and the Rangers/Jays won't play again unless they meet in the playoffs. Fact is, the Rangers (and the fans) haven't forgotten it.

Watching espn and reading twitter and most are on Bautista's side...i didnt expect that at all

Give them sticks and a puck this is more like something I expect to see in a hockey game.

Years ago when there seemed to be a rash of upset like this I had a neighbor who was a big Cardinals fan when he was growing up watching the likes of Musial and crew. He told me that the umpires need to have more power/authority and be able to hand out suspensions etc. I didn't agree with him then but I'm starting to now. There is no place for an all out war on a baseball diamond.

The umpire should be able to tell a player something along this line - "one more word or step and you're suspended for 10 games (w/o pay of course), two steps and it doubles". They (the umpires) need more teeth to stop this stuff. Kids idolize these players and mimic them, this is not setting a good example and these players should be disappointed in their actions. The showboating (across all sports) needs to be dealt with too because it's out of hand.

Some people act like this is something we've never seen before. It seems like we see this a lot less than we used to. I can remember some pretty brutal fights in the 80's that seemed like they wouldn't stop. This was tame compared to what has gone on in the past. Odor should have punched Batista a few more times. I hate the Jays because they are a bunch of whiney babies. They stand there and pose or bat flip on a home run and then seem appalled that someone dare brush them back or hit them. Could you imagine if they played against guys like Ryan, Saberhagen, Feller, Clemens, etc?

As far as slides into second, illegal? Yes, according to the new (over-reactionary) rule. Dirty? Not particularly.

This was eventually going to happen after the bat flip.

I see your point. It might have ended had Bautista not done the "hard" slide. Bautista has had this coming to him for quite a while. I understand that his teammates and Toronto fans will be biased. However, if not Odor then someone else would've given him an "attitude adjustment". Odor just punctuated it quite well.

I have to disagree with you. The umpires should not have the power to hand out suspensions or levy fines. They are subject to the same emotional outbursts as the players (see Joe West). Let someone who is not directly involved make a fair determination.

Also, I'm pretty sure the "these kids idolize these players" argument has been the same for generations upon generations. There were grown-ups acting like children back when Stan Musial played as well. Stop making professional athletes into idols.

Bob Gibson would have beat Batista to death with his own leg when the bat flip happened in the playoffs if he was pitching. Real cute until a man explains the order of the world to you.

This is also very much a cultural deal too baseball is getting browner every year and they play the game a little different than previous generations

^^^Huh? That statement needs some major clarifications IMO...it's so wrong I refuse to quote it. WTF is that %$@&?

I mostly disagree in regard to the subject of how the game is changing. I think the game is becoming more passive because of all the new rules. No contact at home, no contact at second. I don't know what any of this has to do with color or culture. It has more to do IMO with MLB management cow towing to people who think baseball should never be a contact sport.

its simple Latin players play the game with a little more flare than what is considered the "right" way and it rubs players the wrong way

Nonsense. Bautista is an ass in his own culture. Guess who popped him in the chops. Hint: It wasn't a gringo.

Correct...this whole thing started because a guy flipped a bat ....last year ....you want to stop that then dont let him hit the ball 450 feet ...hitting him in the ribs this year is a bitch move ...unwritten rules my ass....Just like Lackey last week saying he has a long memory because a guy hit a homer and admired it a bit...bfd...maybe be a better pitcher and hitters wont have the chance to admire their work....I say that as a Cubs fan....screw Lackey

So you would rather none of this happened? Baseball had all the sports headlines in mid-May, because it was entertaining and sparks debate. Great for the game and great entertainment. Unwritten rules keep the game interesting.

I don't know. Usually you plunk a guy earlier in the game. Not put the tying run on base in the 8th inning.

I'm not a fan of Bautista, but Odor is a punk as well. He can dish out hard slides, but can't take it?

Ty Cobb was also know for other things. 100% don't buy the explanation stated above. Extremely poor choice of words by poster. If it's latin's impacting the game, than say latin's...much better than making a general color of skin comment-which I think you couldn't be more incorrect in implying as a main factor in what transpired here.

Good luck in determining accidental vs intentional. Ego's and pro athletes mean things can get very dirty, very quick in any competitive match It is both part and not part of the game. In general the Bluejays (specifically Donaldson & Bautista) have caught a lot of attention in how they play the game in respect to their competition. I'm not surprised to see them involved at all
