First off.... Thoughts are with the sailors and the families.
My Dad and I were discussing this and couldn't figure out how a cargo ship gets the drop on a US navy destroyer. For context my Dad and I are both Army folks with no real experience with Navy.
From reading the news it is my understanding that visibility was extremely limited, but doesn't the destroyer have sophisticated radar to track incoming ships? How does the destroyer not see a cargo ship lumbering along with what I assume is hours worth of warning?
