Wow. Wheels seem to be falling off in Eugene. Think Helfrich survives?Washington is the real deal this year. Chris Peterson, man. What a great coach.

Peterson is who MANY on this and RSS wanted ALL along (during the Pelini era). I believe Sam-I-Am said Nebraska is one of the few teams he was willing to leave Boise for. Oh well, looks like Nebraska got the better end of the deal by waiting and dragging our feet.....

I heard that too. Would've been cool to see what he could do here.

It's weird. Some years ago they add all the appeal with uniforms and the spread offense. Now 3/4 of the teams in the country do alternate uniforms and 80% of teams, maybe more, run a variety of that offense. Are they losing appeal with recruits?

I said all season, and well before we played them, that this is the worst Oregon team in a decade. My bad, I should have said two decades. Man those wheels came off fast.
Is this season going to be an anomaly for them?

I know they probably won't get back to the Chip Kelly days, but going forward after this year will they consistently be a top 15 team under Helfrich?

They lost Chip kelly
They lost their OC-Scott Frost
They lost their DC replaced with Brady Hoke that has been fired for lack of producing before.

The answer is NO. Their fire is burning so bad their are not enough hoses to put it out. That plus they have no real "history and tradition " other with the last few years. There are not a lot of legacies and memories that hold the fan base together like what has helped us and USC etc endure the hard times. They are going to be irrelevant very soon.

Don't forget about that Heisman winning QB they lost, when you list things that have changed in very recent years...

Unless then can Helfrich and catch lightening in a bottle with the new hire it's going to be middle of the road for those guys going forward IMO. I've believed for weeks now that USC, Texas, Oregon, LSU, plus a few others, are all going to have openings. So Oregon isn't going to get the big name hot guy who's the no brainer guy to hire. Oregon will be behind all those in the pecking order.

Good players are required but great coaching means everything...

Michigan and Washington are fine examples at the moment..

Both schools made a great hire and both schools are doing very well on the football field in a short amount of time.

Maybe what's losing its appeal is the wow factor. I mean, they dressed literally as ducks a couple weeks ago, so I'm pretty sure they are grabbing for a life line...

That said, they still have 9-10 win talent, their recruiting is falling off, but this year is more of a coaching issue than talent. Helfrich seems that he's in over his head.

It'll be interesting which direction they go next, they've been keeping it all in the family since Belloti.

There is no way Oregon maintains a top 15 program. I'd be surprised if they could maintain a top 30 program under Helfrich. I don't mind if they drop back into obscurity along with the flashy alternate uniform trend thing.

The lug nuts were loose in Lincoln. Many saw it, few wanted to admit it. Doesn't matter, it provided an infusion of needed confidence. I'm fully expecting Wisky, Indiana, Minny, Iowa and OSU ...perhaps even Maryland be close, either way games. A strong year is there for the taking, but anything but a given.

My, my I can just feel the optimism and the good feelings coming from you. I mean after watching the awesomeness that both Minnesota and Maryland showed yesterday, it's absolutely obvious I guess that we need to be very concerned about beating them at home. I mean I'm just stunned that we are 5-0-how in the world could we have been so lucky to get to that record at this point?

Maryland certainly less of a concern. Minny is physical, but clearly, clearly not spectacular in any way. Just a long haul, less than half way through, and the one game everyone felt good about was a nail biter against a paper tiger(duck).

I am excited, but cautiously, not blindly

Watching Oregon yesterday reminded me a lot of us last season. New DC and they have tons of missed assignments and gaping holes in the secondary. On top of that, they are playing almost all freshmen on the OL. That's a recipe for disaster. I wouldn't count their program out because we saw first hand how much speed and talent they have. I also saw that they have moved on from their graduate transfer QB to a true freshman, so I get the feeling they are building for the future already.

What we really need True is to go out the next two games and play the first quarter like we have the 4th, take control of the game early, and not let them back in. Nebraska has taken a big step to hang in and win close games. Now they need to take another step and start winning the games we should in the first half. Until we stop playing down to the competition and making every game a nailbiter until the 4th, people will continue to be nervous about every game.

I am hoping that this continues at least 1 more season for them since we travel to Eugene next year. Winking

Yes, it is true that Oregon is not as good as they have been and that takes some of the luster off of our win. Yes, it is true we have played a weak schedule so far. Yes, it is true we have played down to our competition. Yes, it is true we could, therefore, be overrated and end the year 6-6.

Or, we could finish the regular season 11-1, as I think, losing only to OSU. There are reasons for concern, but rather than view us as vulnerable, I think we are instead an improving team on the upswing. I like where we are headed

It's a big difference also playing Oregon (still a talented, but fragile team) before they were knocked down to earth. The game might play out completely different now that they are in panic mode.

I heard today that that Oregon hasn't undertaken a head coaching search since the mid-70s

Rich Brooks hired 1977 >> Bellotti (OC) >> Kelly (OC) >> Helfrich (OC) .. looks like they are going to have to go outside for the next hire

What does Phil Knight think about the situation is the question that must be answered? His answer will play a major roll with what happens next. Winking

Scott frost was that whole team
Too simplistic. The problems were clearly there last year too. He also has no connection with the defensive problems. No Chip Kelly, no Marcus Mariota. That's really the big difference.

I forgot about who their DC is now.....that explains MOST of their problems. Their defense was horrible against Washington.

Chip has had very little NFL success, so clearly Scott carried him at Oregon. Scott also carried Mariota who also has had little NFL stardom. Scott should be something bigger than a coach, though. Pope? President? Moderator in Chief of this message board?

The never really had a great defense in years past so I don't know if their offense ls seriously lacking right now or if their D just got worse. I cant think of many teams who have sustained success over a period of several years who fell so hard, so fast.

When your offense runs true no-huddle, with a porous defense it makes for blowouts. Ask our last staff.
