The parents of a 2-year-old boy who died in a hot car in Dothan were under the influence of marijuana and passed out when the toddler slipped out of the house and got trapped in the vehicle, police said Tuesday.
Melinda King, 38, and Robert King, 36, were arrested about 1:45 p.m. Tuesday on charges of manslaughter and first-degree marijuana possession, said Dothan police Capt. Will Benny. They are being held at the Dothan City Jail and will be later transferred to the Houston County Jail with bond set at $45,000 apiece.
Their son, Castiel King, was able to get out of the family’s house on Lace Drive in the Prevatt Place subdivision about 3:30 p.m. Friday. He managed to get himself in the car but then could not get back out. He was discovered unresponsive at 7:15 p.m. and rushed to SouthEast Health where he was pronounced dead.
The actual temperature in Dothan Friday was about 94 degrees. Studies show that within one hour, the temperature inside of a car parked in the sun on a day that reached 95 degrees can average 116 degrees.
An investigation revealed that the child was left unattended because both parents were asleep in the home and under the influence of marijuana. “It was to the extent they couldn’t care for the child,’’ Benny said.
There were other children at the home at the time. Police said they could not elaborate on the other kids in the home.
“It’s tragic all the way around,’’ the captain said.
